Calmness and common sense is key here, cramming is not really going to help. The night before their KS2 SATs exams, help make sure they have all the necessary stationery needed for the exam, plus allowable snacks and water bottles. Insist on an early night and provide a hearty breakfast! Keep any exam-talk low-key, use distraction techniques for nervous children, and wish them luck. Afterwards, take care not to launch an in-depth interrogation. Offer plenty of praise and then move on.

When the KS2 SATs results come in
SATs results for KS2 SATs are usually released to primary schools in July. It’s a strange time, as two months have passed and many children completely forget the emphasis placed on the tests back in May. Especially as there is nothing that can be done to change results, it is important to be positive and celebrate all achievements. After all, this is the culmination of your child’s primary education.

Don’t dwell on disappointments – the changes your youngster is undergoing are more than enough to deal with (leaving behind close friends and trusted teachers, while braving the prospect of being the littlest fish in the big pond at secondary school).

Above all else, please keep KS2 SATs in perspective. Regardless of how your child is streamed the following September, just four months later the secondary school will have conducted internal tests of its own, and sets will shift around according to current ability by January of Year 7. A child who was selected to sit Level 6 of the KS2 SATs and failed on the day may well have swum up to the top set after on-going observation. A child who was exceptionally adept at exam techniques and scored highly may still need plenty of attention in other key areas.
