Humanists & Freethinkers of Cape Fear Host Journalist Janet Heimlich Talk on Child Abuse

Award Winning Author of "Breaking Their Will: Shedding Light on Religious Child Maltreatment" Janet Heimlich to tackle the issue of religious childhood abuse and how the Humanist community can work with other groups to confront the problem.

WILMINGTON, N.C. - March 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Janet Heimlich will present the talk "Breaking Their Will: Shedding Light on Religious Child Maltreatment" on Sunday, March 15, 2015, 6pm at the monthly meeting of the Humanists & Freethinkers of Cape Fear. The program will be held at the Bridge Center, 127-40 S. College Road, Wilmington, North Carolina.

Heimlich will discuss how religious individuals and organizations are joining secularists in confronting religious child maltreatment, and explore ways that secularists and humanists can work collaboratively to combat this critically important social problem.

Janet Heimlich is an award-winning journalist and the author of "Breaking Their Will: Shedding Light on Religious Child Maltreatment," the first book to take an in-depth look at child abuse and neglect enabled by religious belief in the United States. She is Executive Director of the Child-Friendly Faith Project, a national, nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity that educates the public about the impact that religious, spiritual, and cultural beliefs and practices have on children.

Heimlich has been a freelance reporter for National Public Radio, and has written articles for a number of publications in Texas. She has won nine journalism awards, including a “Radio Journalist of the Year” Lone Star Award. She received a B.A. in Communications from Stanford University in 1984.
