H2O Activist, Local Potter Team Up to Create New Line of Water Pottery

HILLSDALE, N.Y. - March 16, 2015 - PRLog -- There are few things that share a closer relationship than clay and water. Put together, they not only produce the magnificence, beauty and practicality of ceramics, they also account for the vast majority of the makeup of the Earth’s surface. But now, the two are coming together in a different manner. One of the world’s most passionate activists and enthusiasts for water has teamed up with the country’s most prolific producer of everyday use wood-fired pottery to create a product that is beneficial across the board.

Leslie Gabriel, the founder and CEO of WaterCheck.biz of Hillsdale, N.Y., and Todd Piker of Cornwall Bridge Pottery of Cornwall, Conn. are collaborating on a new line of water pottery, Terra Water Pottery, that combines design, form and function — or as they put it, creates pure water through art.

“We are combining art, beauty, simplicity and functionality with these pieces,” said Gabriel, whose company is a leader in the development and distribution of water filtration, personal hydration and water conservation products. “I was importing and distributing similar items from Brazil, and I thought that in our area we have more potters than lawyers. It took some time, but finally when I met with Todd Piker, I knew we could work together to produce something really special.”

The purpose of the Terra Water Pottery line is to create water dispensers, water filter crocks and water carafes in the most holistic fashion possible. Ceramics, Piker explains, is the way to accomplish that.

“Terra Water Pottery is offering purists the opportunity to have a vessel to deliver their water that is keeping with their sense of holistic use,” said Piker. “The difference between my pots and others is that they have the ability to keep water for tea or liquid for cider warm as well as keep liquids cool longer than stainless steel or plastic vessels.”

In addition to providing individuals with the wholesome beauty and practicality of handmade, earthenware water dispensers, Gabriel and Piker’s collaboration is supporting the effort to bring pure, clean water to those in need across the globe. A percentage of the revenue generated from Terra Water Pottery’s sales will be donated to the non-profit organization, Potters for Peace.

“When Leslie brought up that part of his idea for this project, I was blown away. The magic of what Leslie brings to everything he does is beyond commendable. I’m thrilled to be a part of this project alongside him,” added Piker.

Since 1998, representatives of Potters for Peace have traveled the world assisting with the establishment of small factories or workshops that produce a low-cost ceramic water filter that can bring clean, potable water to those who need it most.

“The mission of Potters for Peace is to bring effective ceramic techniques and technology to help improve peoples' lives in the developing world. We could never do what we do without critical financial support of like-minded potters and others, both in our community building projects with rural potters in Nicaragua and in the work we do promoting ceramic water filters as a household water treatment solution around the world,” said Abby Silver, Potters for Peace director. “We look forward to partnering with Terra Water Pottery. We truly appreciate being part of a project that combines clay with design, form, function and simplicity.”
