WASHINGTON - March 9, 2015 - PRLog -- On Saturday, March 7th, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Chancellor of Public Schools Kaya Henderson hosted the first inaugural Mayor’s Masked Ball in support of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). LEAP CEO and President, Dr. Clayton G. Lawrence, who has been a strong supporter of Mayor Bowser, attended the event, continuing to show unwavering support for D.C. youth and educational initiatives.

As Mayor Bowser begins her first term with a strong commitment to improving education for D.C.’s youth, she has quickly developed a partnership with the leader who has been speaking on behalf of D.C.’s youth for the last four years. Kaya Henderson, confirmed as Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools on June 21, 2011, has been instrumental in making critical changes to the foundation of Washington’s public education system. Her participation in and support for events like the mayor’s ball have proven her commitment to going above and beyond to ensure that the students of Washington D.C. have every opportunity to succeed and pursue the highest levels of education possible.

Dr. Clayton Lawrence commented on Ms. Henderson’s prominent role in improving the state of D.C. public schools by stating, “Washington D.C. has experienced an undeniable impact on the state of its public education systems since Chancellor Henderson stepped into her role four years ago. The passion with which she serves the students, parents, and teachers in our community drives higher levels of success and attainment each and every day, and her partnership with Mayor Bowser will prove that the best is yet to come for our public schools. I am humbled to offer my support to these two phenomenal leaders and events like these that will inevitably change the lives of youth for years to come.”

The event also served as an opportunity to posthumously recognize The Honorable Marion Barry for his profound legacy of empowering young people. Cora Masters Barry was on hand to accept the United Negro College Fund Award on behalf of her late husband.

“This event was not only a wonderful opportunity to bring people together for a good cause, but serves as a reminder of what D.C.’s political leaders, business leaders, and community members want Washington D.C. to be. The strength of this city is firmly rooted in the future of its youth and we must all remain committed to doing all that we can to ensure that every generation to come has more opportunities to succeed than the generation that came before them,” said Dr. Lawrence.
