Antioxidant and much more: all virtues of a plant that was also appreciated in Ancient China

BOLOGNA, Italy - March 6, 2015 - PRLog -- Green tea and its beneficial properties were already known in the East more than 2 thousand years ago. This plant (Camellia sinensis) is indeed still appreciated and used in herbal medicine for its peculiarities:

·         antioxidant properties;

·        it favours drainage of body fluids;

·        it promotes maintenance of a balanced body weight;

·        tonic properties, useful for combating exhaustion and fatigue.

3 times less caffeine than black tea and a greater antioxidant power

But what makes green tea so valuable?

The shoots and young leaves of this plant are rich in polyphenols and catechins, substances useful for their beneficial properties. Green tea catechins, present in high amounts in the leaves of the plant (they represent 30-40% of dry weight), may indeed be useful in counteracting the action of free radicals and, consequently, protecting cells from oxidative stress. Furthermore, against an antioxidant power 6 times greater than that of black tea, green tea contains 1/3 of caffeine. For this reason, it is also suitable for those who are usually sensitive to this substance or are not used to consuming it.

It is said that the first to drink green tea by putting the plant's leaves to steep in a jug with boiling water was a Chinese emperor, back in 2700 BC. Regardless of the veracity or not of this story, what is certain is that a Japanese Buddhist monk, Eisai, as far back as 1215 BC, wrote an interesting treatise dedicated to this plant entitled "How to stay healthy by drinking tea".

The ancient wisdom of the East was thus once again right.

Although it is not reasonable to expect miraculous results from green tea, it is nevertheless a valuable help for all-round well-being (always within a varied and balanced diet), right because of its recognised properties.
