BURBANK, Calif. - March 5, 2015 - PRLog -- The Editors’ Lounge hosted their monthly educational and networking event with post-production professionals from Los Angeles and surrounding areas getting an up close look at the latest time-saving tools from Cinedeck (http://www.cinedeck.com) and Wiredrive. (http://www.wiredrive.com) Product demonstrations were given simultaneously throughout the evening, followed by Q&A sessions.  All attendees participated in a raffle drawing with one lucky winner going home at the end of the evening with a G drive compliments of Wiredrive.

Cinedeck Founder/CEO, Charles Dautremont, company COO, Jane Sung, and Director of Sales & Marketing, Michael DeMucci, were on-hand to provide an overview of the Cinedeck RX, MX and ZX product-lines and discuss their applications within file-based media workflows. These included on-set studio and live-event production, multi-channel, multi-codec media ingest, and edit-ready file creation for editorial and post-production environments, as well as content archival solutions.  Cinedeck has been in the record/ingest/encode market for a number of years now, and just released its latest product, the Cinedeck ZX, plus an exciting new feature that is guaranteed to save editors a lot of time, money and frustration.

Dautremont gave attendees a look at the multi-user interface and basic system operations. There was great interest in the demonstration of Cinedeck’s new file-to-file Insert Edit function. This is a first-of-its-kind feature, allowing users to insert video and audio segments within closed files. File-based Insert Edit allows last minute changes to be made quickly and eliminates the need to re-render entire sequences and projects. It also eliminates the need to re-QC, since the balance of the project remains unchanged. Currently, this feature is supported in ProRes, AVC-I, DNxHD, Uncompressed, and DPX, with plans to support H.264 and XDCAM later this year.

Audience members were encouraged to try their hand at Cinedeck’s File-based Insert-edit, controlled via Avid Media Composer. Everyone remarked that it was very easy and similar to a tape-based edit. Since Cinedeck emulates an SRW-5500 in Advanced Deck Control mode, the process of file-to-file Insert Edit is simple for any facility engineer or editor to start using right away.

“File-to-file Insert Edit has been the elusive Holy Grail of file-based workflows. I’m very excited that Cinedeck is the first company to deliver this much needed editorial and finishing function,” said Dautremont.

Jane Sung added “File-to-file Insert Edit is a game changer for the industry. The time and cost savings offered by this one feature alone are incredible – especially when you consider the number of facilities having multiple shows who have mission-critical deadlines. With file-to-file Insert Edit, you can deliver your file-based post deliverables in one pass, versus having to do two or more passes; and further to this, you can eliminate tape from your post workflow altogether.”

Howard Brock, Associate Producer on the FX series Anger Management gave a case study presentation of the efficient workflow that was used on the Lionsgate/Debmar-Mercury production that allowed a team of four to post and deliver 90 episodes in 2 years (double the norm for a multi-cam sitcom) without any overtime.  Utilizing Cinedeck recorders that captured four cameras directly into an Avid ISIS shared storage system accessed by two Avid Media Composer systems, an Avid Symphony and a DaVinci Resolve they were able to save the production literally millions of dollars compared to a traditional tape based workflow.    “We were able to put more time and effort into making the show look better because the efficiencies of direct capture and in-house finishing gave us the means to do so,” said Brock. Encouraging Producers to make well informed choices, Brock emphasized the value of looking beyond line item savings to understanding how an efficient workflow can save money in multiple areas of production having previously owned a post house himself.

Clay Burton, Account Executive of Wiredrive, demonstrated how editors, post supervisors and executive producers use Wiredrive to win new projects as well as manage client communication during production and post.  Burton demonstrated how Wiredrive users can create custom reels, modify a sent reel without having to resend a new email, and how to track recipient behavior with real-time analytics. He also showed attendees how to create a production hub and how to use a familiar folder structure to organize assets and add collaborators with specific user settings to enable them to upload and download needed files. Burton also showed how cuts could be sent as quick links or full on user review and approval presentations.  He concluded the presentation by showing how a ProRes 422 (172K Bit Rate) 1GB file plays back through Wiredrive smooth streaming transcoder even on a poor connection.

The next Editors’ Lounge will be held on Friday, March 27th with a Pre-NAB panel discussion.
