"Born In The Wild" debuts Tonight on Lifeftime-10pm

Women Giving Birth In The Wild, a truly informative reality show about women with low risk pregnancies giving birth in outdoor settings challenging how today all births are considered "emergencies" as most pregnant women enter the emergency room doors at the nearest hospital, yet these women are choosing to deliver "in the wild" (nature).

NEW YORK - March 3, 2015 - PRLog -- Born in The Wild

A new show on Lifetime that is getting a lot of press before show one even airs, has been an easy target of critics for pushing the extremes of reality television by having women give birth outdoors.

However, these women have chosen this birth process with or without cameras and it just so happened a show was born from it, and some babies.

The reality is these are low risk pregnancies, and women who have given birth before, know what to expect, and prefer the calm of nature vs the sterility and coldness of a hospital institution.

I think the show does a good job at communicating the purpose these women have made to have their babies this way, and what was at first a “what in the world?” question I had responding to the screaming and moaning of labor coming from studio sound mixing rooms, I had to cue up a screening room to watch an episode from start to finish to get the whole story.

I’ve given birth. I’ve given birth in a hospital. There was nothing peaceful or calming about it. The epidural came too late, my doctor was annoyed to be up at 4am delivering my son. My hospital bed was rickety, cold tile floors, horrible décor, and my baby, once delivered, put in 24 hour observation—into the baby room where family, mom, and dad can go look at the babies like they are zoo animals. I was miserable, I wanted to go home, but they kept me there on lock down for yet another 24 hours.

I can completely relate to these women’s quest for a more natural experience, and I would assume those that chose this method on this show have done their due diligence as best as they can as to what to do in case of an emergency.

Let’s remember, birth has been taken place since the beginning of time, and it has only become an “emergency” and a trip to the emergency room at a hospital in the last century. Home births are being replaced by hospital births because they are now the more perceived safe route, but that’s not necessarily true.

Don’t get me started on what you can catch just being inside a hospital: MRSA, C.diff, VRE, and antibiotic resistant superbugs.

What this show brings to mind are the other options to pregnant women—i.e. doulas, midwives, and that these options are not ludicrous or unsafe in low risk pregnancies.

Born in The Wild is a good show that brings up valid questions/debate about delivery of babies in this country. I hope it gets women talking, and women considering all of their options—including giving birth in the wild.

If I could do it over again, I’d chose a nice waterfall in Maui.
