By: NorCal Press These hearings are an important opportunity to speak out to ensure that housing rights are not sacrificed to budget cuts to further enrich Silicon Valley corporations. There are literally hundreds of Congress members who hate Section 8 and all the people on it, and will do anything to cut it and eliminate it, if people do not stand up for their rights. Some of the policies being considered are: · Reducing payment standards to make it harder to find affordable apartments. · Reducing subsidy standards (the number of bedrooms allowed) even more. · Reducing the number of choice (tenant-based) · Designating more vouchers to people with special needs. · Allowing tenants with disabilities to pay a lower percentage of income for rent. · Attaching time limits to vouchers (say five years) to reduce time people stay on the waiting list. The final policies adopted will depend on the public. Above all, it is important to speak up and send a message that no cuts are acceptable in such a wealthy society, and instead of competing for fewer and fewer homes, people should be standing up for affordable housing for all. Hearings will be held at the following times and places: 2:00 PM Thurs March 5 Mayfair Community Center 2039 Kammerer Ave, San Jose 95116 6:00 PM Thurs March 6 Sunnyvale Community Center 550 E Remington Dr, Sunnyvale 94087 Note: vouchers will not be issued at these meetings.
