What Are Artists Inventing with Foldforming Now?

Foldforming as a new art form is still exploding across the globe as artists discover new applications. “Foldforming for Vessels” is this year's theme at the Center for Metal Arts’ annual Foldforming Event with art pioneer Charles Lewton-Brain.

WARWICK, N.Y. - May 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Foldforming, for those who have not seen examples of this new technique, is a creative combination of origami-like folding, combined with forging, rolling, and other forming techniques to create dimension and organic structure in the metals.

"Foldformng for Vessels"  is the focus of this year's annual mid-summer Foldforming Intensive at the Center for Metal Arts in downstate New York, which brings the celebrated foldforming pioneer Charles Lewton-Brain to the USA on July 24-26, 2015 for three information-packed days. This year's focus views the families of folded forms as compositional elements. This workshop will explore the many applications for vessel forming, pods and other enclosing forms, using the endless variations possible from the essential families of the folded form.

This year at CLB 2015, there are four ways to participate:
1. Full Registration: Demonstrations, daily talks and conversation with Charles Lewton-Brain, plus a block of hands-on studio time each day in the Center for Metal Arts studio to practice techniques and develop ideas. Students are encouraged to bring their own work, finished or unfinished, for informal feedback.

2. Audit Registration: Come for the informal talks and close-up demonstrations with Charles Lewton-Brain, with no hands-on studio sessions.

3. One-day passes: Available online, or look for staff at the door. A call ahead is appreciated.

4. Attend the Foldform Awards Dinner, Friday July 24 at 6 PM.  Winners to this year’s Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition will be announced at the annual Foldform Awards Dinner, held in the former painting studio of surrealist painter Kurt Seligmann at the Seligmann Center for the Arts in Sugar Loaf, NY. The dinner is open to the public, with online dinner tickets at http://www.centerformetalarts.com/. The evening, which marks the opening day of the annual event, is an informal dinner of conversation with the celebrated and accessible Charles Lewton-Brain, and is catered by local farm-to-table favorite Black Dirt Gourmet.

The full registration package is at http://www.centerformetalarts.com/small-metals-workshops.....

The annual foldforming event coincides with the Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition, which brings in entries from jewelers and fine metalsmiths worldwide. This year's competition deadline is midnight, June 15. Artists may enter up to three pieces, with two views of each entry. Entry details are at http://www.centerformetalarts.com/clb-foldform-competition.html (http://www.centerformetalarts.com). The new book Foldforming at 30 by Iceforge Press celebrates the winners of the first competitions, and documents thirty years of artistic explorations of this innovative forming technique.

"Charles Lewton-Brain is one of the most knowledgeable, most celebrated and most accessible metalsmiths in North America," wrote Alan Revere in The Innovators. His work has been recognized by the British Museum Research Lab, by a 1991 Rolex award, and in 2012 he was the recipient of the prestigious Governor General Award for his contribution to Canadian arts. Master goldsmith Charles Lewton-Brain is Head of the Jewellery/Metals Program at the Alberta College of Art and Design. He is a world-renowned author, educator, artist, and has pioneered the innovative suite of metal techniques known as foldforming. He is the author of Foldforming, the definitive book on the topic.

Foldforming can create rapid changes of dimension, and can readily construct pieces that appear to be chased or repousséd. “It is addictive,” jewelers and small metals artists say about the origami-like folding and forming of copper, silver, iron and other materials.

Registration details for CLB 2015 at the Center for Metal Arts are online at www.centerformetalarts.com, to sign up for a seat at CLB 2015, or for the Foldform Awards Dinner with Charles.
