What Is Net Neutrality all about?

TORONTO - Feb. 24, 2015 - PRLog -- You have heard of Net Neutrality but do you know what it is and how it affects you?  We put together a simple explanation of Net Neutrality.

Net Neutrality is the principle that data on the Internet is moved blindly and impartially without regard to content, destination or source therefore no one has VIP treatment compared to another service.

No country is in charge of regulating the Internet however the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has considerable influence and been at the forefront of this issue.  The FCC extended carrier network rules to Internet Service Providers (ISPs), requiring them to offer fair and equal access to the Internet for all content back in 2010.

A Court of Appeals ruled that the FCC does not have the authority to extend carrier network rules to ISPs and people began to speculate about whether or not the FCC would use its power to reclassify Internet service as a telecommunications service in 2014.

Many high-speed Internet carriers are seeking a two-tiered Internet service model where the carrier would be able to charge content providers a premium fee for priority placement and faster speed across their pipes.

The two-tiered model would carry extra costs incurred for premium service and in the end it will be passed down to the consumer resulting in higher prices.   Net Neutrality keeps the playing field flat and competitive.
