Verdeblu demystify the “shipbroker” role

A mix between a travel agent and a nautical expert, the yacht charter team explains the elusive and integral role of the shipbroker to coordinate a safe and well-planned vacation at sea

ROME - Feb. 23, 2015 - PRLog -- Unknown by most, the shipbroker represents the key role in the yacht charter business. Verdeblu is the Italian team of shipbrokers with over twenty years in the business and countless planned yacht charter travels under their belt. According to the seasoned team, the shipbroker is the professional in the business that must know everything related to the boats, the sea, the itineraries, and above all, be able to enjoy and know how to interact and build relationships with people.

“We love to organize tailor made vacations on board luxury yachts,” says the Verdeblu team. “We follow clients from the beginning – the search moment – till the moment in which they depart, and even after. Our work doesn’t end as soon as they sign the contract.”

The role of the shipbroker, in fact, is most explainable as intermediaries and negotiators in addition to expert travel agents. As a travel agent, they suggest and prepare itineraries, but their key role is mediator between the client and the yacht owner, first searching the most appropriate yacht based on the client’s request and their own expert knowledge in the field. They then negotiate the price with the owner on behalf of the client.

“We begin the search for the client, showing them photos, descriptions and prices for different types of yachts, and then we contact the ship owners for availability,” says the Verdeblu team. “From there we work on a final price between the client and the yacht owner. As shipbrokers and mediators, it is our job to make sure both are satisfied.”

Once yacht selection is squared away, the role of the shipbroker continues with coordination of services on board. They speak with the hostess and chef that will be taking care on the yacht to prepare special meal and drink requests. Their travel agent expertise kicks into high gear, discussing a suitable itinerary based solely on the client’s requests, however detailed they may be. Private parties on board or babysitting services, for example, are arranged upon request, as well as island excursions, translators, transport and restaurants.

“We take care of everything, providing a beginning to end service,” says Verdeblu. The most difficult thing as a shipbroker is negotiating with the yacht owners that sometimes don’t want to budge on the price. But we are professionals, and we try to make fair proposals that are still in line with our client’s budget.”

Usually part of the luxury travel industry, shipbrokers are a key piece of the luxury travel experience. They combine their nautical, travel and negotiating expertise to ensure their clients’ experience is stress-free, well planned and satisfying their every travel desire.
