Civil War items, slave documents, stoneware, guns and rifles, more at Tom's Auctions' March 14 sale

SUFFOLK, Va. - Feb. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Around 600 lots of antiques and collectibles, pulled from local estates, attics and barns, plus other quality consignments, in categories ranging from Civil War items to period American furniture to stoneware to old rifles and guns, will all come up for bid Saturday, March 14^th at the historic former Village Auction Barn building at 101 Philhower Drive in Suffolk, Va.

The auction will be held by Superior Auction Sales, which is based in Suffolk and holds regular sales in the building, along with Tom’s Auctions & Appraisals, also based in Suffolk. The 50-plus rifles and guns – many of them rare, antique and highly collectible – are being offered by Superior Auction Sales. Tom’s Auctions & Appraisals is bringing a broad selection of items.

Civil War items will feature a Pennsylvania regiment document dated 1865 and descended in the family of the U.S. (Union) soldier, a Confederate muster dated 1862 in two parts for Butler’s Brigade, early slave documents (including tax sales receipts for the purchase of land, horses and slaves, one of them an estate inventory showing the appraised value of certain items, including two slave women valued at $400 each), and some Virginia documents and other related material.

Furniture items will include a Northern Chippendale chest (circa 1780-1810) with a matching serpentine mahogany dresser and chest, a handsome Southern blanket chest with original blue paint found in South Hampton County, Va., a Victorian marble-top wash stand, a 19^th century jelly cupboard, a custom-built fall front desk, an English oak draw leaf table, an early ladder back chair, a mid-century mahogany secretary, a hanging corner cupboard and an old pie safe.

Fans of militaria will not be disappointed. The weapons will include a circa-1900 German large caliber target rifle, a Browning automatic shotgun from the 1960s or ‘70s, a Luger .22 caliber target pistol, a 1950s vintage Remington derringer, a recent Remington Winchester rifle, many old military rifles, weapons by Savage, H&R, Colt and others, and newer and older handguns.

Stoneware – the hard, opaque pottery fired at a high temperature and first made in Great Britain around 1675 – will include jugs, pitchers, beverage dispensers and crocks, by makers such as Swasey Jones & Co. (Portland, Me.), Sweeney (Henrico Cty., Va.), and J. D. Craven (Randolph & Moore Co., N.C, several signed). Yellow ware, red ware and sponge ware will also be sold.

There is even a piece of farm equipment in the sale – a Massey Ferguson 65 tractor from the 1960s. Musical lots will feature a Joseph Guarnerius violin, a Gibson steel guitar, a Hagstrom 12-string guitar, Beatles records, Elvis books and records and a Seeburg jukebox. Nautical items will include a ship’s model, a large anchor and early scientific balance scales in a glass case.

Pottery will include examples by makers such as Hull, Roseville and Van Briggle. Also sold will be an 1807 Gilbert banjo clock, a large Miller Beer and other advertising signs, an old Coca-Cola tray, cowboy collectibles, NASCAR items, petroliana (gas station memorabilia), coins and paper money, Lladro figurines, costume jewelry, fishing rods, Carnival glass, cut glass items and more.

Previews will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 12-13, from 10-5, and on Saturday, March 14^th, the date of sale, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., when the first gavel comes down. Telephone and absentee bids will be accepted. A 13 percent buyer’s premium will be applied to all purchases (3 percent discount for cash or check). Terms will be cash, good checks and all major credit cards.
