Follow on Google News | Holocaust Remembered - Pavel Friedman’s “Last Butterfly” Dances its way through South FloridaThe Bamachol Dance Academy of the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach, is known in South Florida for its diverse and high-caliber dance performances. This time they have taken things to the next level.
By: Michael-Ann Russell JCC Directed and choreographed by world-renowned Spanish choreographer, Fernando Hurtado, "Butterflies No Longer Live Here" is a powerful performance against hate, indifference, and prejudice. This production will be presented in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day. Originally performed in Panama, the intention of "Butterflies No Longer Live Here" is to educate audiences about the Holocaust, and generate the message of tolerance. This choreographed masterpiece was inspired by the famous poem "The Last Butterfly" by Pavel Friedmann, who was born in Prague and killed in Auschwitz (Poland). This performance will feature eight professional dancers traveling from Spain and Panama, along with the choreographer himself, Fernando Hurtado, who will join over 70 cast members from our local community, on stage in a powerful interpretation. The production will take audiences through various stages of the Holocaust - life before the Nazi persecution, the ghettos, the train to the concentration camps, the concentration camps, and liberation. “This is a very ambitious project with incredible scenery, special visual effects, and an international cast that makes it a not-to-miss event,” expressed Roger Weiger, Director of the Bamachol Dance Academy. The ensemble also includes lighting and sound technicians from Colombia and Cuba, and scenery, props & costumes arriving from Guatemala - where "Butterflies No Longer Live Here" was recently presented in Panama & Costa Rica to rave reviews.
