LOS ANGELES - Feb. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- Today ccMixter.org is pleased to announce the commencement of Music for Healing - a campus-wide collaborative project with the University of Utah. This cooperative endeavor between students, faculty, alumni and a worldwide community of music producers will create new, open music for the purpose of healing.

“Music is an alternative door to reach memory,” explains Dr. Norman Foster, professor of neurology and director of the Center for Alzheimer’s Care at the University of Utah. “Its ability to inspire positive emotions benefits patients and also their family members.”

The University of Utah’s Schools of Medicine, Music, and Business, as well as the Marriott Library and Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, have all united to embark upon this creative endeavor with ccMixter.org. Students have been invited to record vocals and samples at engineer-provided recording sessions in the Marriott Library from February 17 through March 10 and can reserve a session here: http://www.lib.utah.edu/music4healing/recording.php

The Marriott Library is also hosting an Open House on Thursday, February 19th, from 11:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. wherein students, alumni, patients, and faculty can record pre-selected healing quotes, register for the project and meet some of the doctors and faculty facilitating Music for Healing.

“Music connects people in the truest way,” states Emily Richards, CEO of nonprofit music community ccMixter.org. “It is an honor to collaborate with so many gifted individuals across the University of Utah campus – to create healing music that will be accessible to people in need all around the world. I speak on behalf of the global ccMixter community in offering our thanks and gratitude for being part of this project.”

ccMixter’s 45,000 artists worldwide will participate by producing vocals, samples, and healing music tracks that utilize University of Utah contributed musical source material - from patients, students and faculty. The University enrolls more than 30,000 students across campus.

The uploading of spoken word pieces, a cappella and choral voice, instrumentals, classical arrangements, and field recordings of nature for Music for Healing starts today. Musical contributions submitted by March 10 will then be incorporated into fully produced tracks, mixed and produced by the community at ccMixter.org as well as University of Utah students, faculty, and alumni.

Creative Commons (CC) licenses are the foundation of Music for Healing.  Applying CC licenses to the source material enables collaboration and allows each musical contribution to become part of an open library that other creators can interact with. The resulting CC licensed library of new music will be freely sharable with patients and families whom ccMixter.org and the University of Utah collectively aim to help.

Connecting and healing through the power of music will be explored by the ccMixter community and the University of Utah through involvement in the Music for Healing project.

The hashtag #Music4Healing will be used across social media platforms.
