How to Incorporate More "Green" Into Your New Home Design

Today's home buyers want more eco-friendly homes. Discover some of the ways you can incorporate green into your home design.
MABLETON, Ga. - Feb. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- How to Incorporate More "Green" Into Your New Home Design

These days, one of the hottest trends in the building industry is "green" construction materials. And, it's a trend that most likely won't go away as more and more people adopt more eco-responsible lifestyles.

If you're having a new home built, or you're in the planning stages of your home's design, then going green will not only make your home better for the environment, but over time, it will help you control your utility bills and other household costs. Here, Southland's home builder in Mableton shares some ways to incorporate more "green" into your new home design.

Roofing

Traditional asphalt shingle roofing is one of the worst choices for a green home. For starters, it needs replacing every 15 to 20 years, and all of the detritus ends up in the landfill. Instead, go with a longer lasting alternative, like metal roofing. Metal roofing not only looks great, but it is highly durable and naturally heat-resistant. For an even greener choice, go with recycled aluminum roofing.

Flooring

If you have it in your budget, go with bamboo flooring. Bamboo is a very fast growing grass that is very beneficial to the environment. Because it grows so fast, it is a completely renewable resource. As an added benefit, flooring made from bamboo is water and stain resistant, as well as termite resistant. And, it is warm and soft underfoot, which you'll appreciate in the winter.

Windows

Ideally, your windows should be double-paned energy-efficient windows with a certified Energy Star rating. This type of window will help keep cool and warm air from escaping in the summer and winter months, respectively. The result will be a more comfortable home with lower utility bills.

Water Heater

Water heater tanks are one of the biggest energy wasters in the home. The reason is because the water is constantly heated even when it's not being used. Instead, consider having a tankless water heater installed in your home. This type of water heater heats the water on-demand so not only will you save on your gas/power bill, but you'll also never run out of hot water.

If you have a garden or you like watering your grass in the summer, then consider installing a rainwater collection system and use the water you gather to water your garden and lawn.

Fireplace

A fireplace is a popular addition in custom-built homes, but the type you choose can have an impact on your carbon footprint. Although an old fashioned wood burning fireplace adds warmth and a romantic pop and crackle, it is considerably worse for the environment than a natural gas fireplace. If you want a fireplace installed in your home, go with gas and your home will be greener for it.

Solar

If your home is going to have access to plenty of unrestricted natural sunlight, then having a solar panel system installed on your home will drastically cut your electric bills. If you're naturally energy-conservative, then your system may even be able to generate a surplus of energy, resulting in you getting a check from the utility company instead of you paying them.
