Feb. 11, 2015 - PRLog -- The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) today presented 2,089 copies of Vantage Views II, purchased by the engineering community in support of the IES redevelopment project, to 217 public libraries and schools, including secondary schools, junior colleges, polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education and universities.

Held at ‘The Pod’ at the National Library Board, the event also marked one of the largest individual contributions to the IES Building Fund so far. Er. Lim Soon Hock, author of Vantage Views II, a publication supported by The Business Times, will channel all net proceeds from the sale of the book, amounting to $150,000 to date, to the development of a new building and enhanced premises for IES members.

A second collection of thoughts and perspectives on a wide range of contemporary issues by Er. Lim, Vantage Views II offers insights into many significant events and turbulent crises that occurred between 2009 and 2011. Er. Lim is a Member of IES’ Council Advisory Panel and the Chairman of IES fundraising Steering Committee.

To provide school students, as well as the public, with access to the insights and experience of the engineering-trained business maven in companies across a variety of industries in various capacities, IES has been encouraging corporations and engineers to purchase Vantage Views II and donate them to libraries. This effort is in celebration of IES-SG50, an IES campaign to commemorate engineering achievements in Singapore in conjunction with Singapore’s 50th birthday in 2015 and IES’ 50th anniversary in 2016.

“We are delighted by and thankful for the overwhelming response and enthusiasm by members and friends of IES in sharing Vantage Views II with students and the public. By donating Vantage Views II to public and school libraries, IES hopes to make wisdom on contemporary issues readily accessible to students and broaden their minds to the rapidly changing societal and economic landscape. We also hope that Er. Lim’s success across various fields including CEO, technopreneur, board member and private investor will demonstrate the diversity and extent an engineering training can lead to, and inspire more students to select engineering as a course of study,” said Er. Chong Kee Sen, President, IES.

“IES is deeply appreciative to Er. Lim Soon Hock for channelling net proceeds from the sales of Vantage Views II to the IES building fund and the engineering community for their support by purchasing the book. Their selfless acts are important catalysts for the completion of the IES building project,” added Er. Chong.

“It is my privilege to be able to contribute to two worthy causes by IES with Vantage Views II – to nurture the next generation of engineers and to build a new home for engineers. This could not have been achieved without the support of IES members and the engineering community. I hope our passion for engineering will inspire students to aspire to become engineers, so that Singapore will continue to have a strong pool of nation-builders and wealth-creators to drive its progress beyond 50 years,” said Er. Lim.

Scheduled for completion in 2015, the IES Green Building @ Bukit Tinggi will stand adjacent to the current IES building. The new annex will cater to membership growth and provide new premises for engineers to gather for social, business, professional and career development.

About The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES)

The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) was formally established in July 1966 as the national society of engineers in Singapore. IES is the premier engineering institution in Singapore and is called upon by the Government to provide feedback on professional engineering matters.

IES is well represented among the faculty members of the major engineering institutions of higher learning in Singapore. Through close collaboration with the local universities and polytechnics, IES organises courses, seminars and talks for engineers and IES members to advance the continuous development of engineers.

The Institution maintains close links with professional organisations of engineers regionally and throughout the world. These include organisations in Australia, China, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States. The Institution also represents Singapore in the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO) and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) in promoting goodwill, fellowship and exchange of knowledge among all engineers in ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region.

Through its Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB), IES obtained full signatory status in the Washington Accord (WA) in June 2006. The entry grants IES the authority to represent Singapore, the first country within the ASEAN region which has obtained full signatory status in the WA, to vet education systems under the WA mutual recognition framework.
