Ammonia slip TDL monitoring systems prove very valuable to coal fired power plants

By: Cemtek Environmental, Inc.
SANTA ANA, Calif. - Feb. 11, 2015 - PRLog -- Cemtek Environmental, a technology leader in Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), recently installed eight, Model 7000 Tunable Diode Laser Multipoint Monitoring Systems (TDLMS) measuring Ammonia (NH3) at the DTE Electric Company Monroe Power Plant, a four unit, coal-fired power plant located in Monroe, Michigan.  DTE needed a highly responsive NH3-slip monitor to continuously control their NH3 additions to prevent air preheater pluggage and monitor the SCR boxes for efficient NH3 distribution. The model 7000, along with the ammonia injection grid, allows for quick and inexpensive tuning options.

The Monroe application consisted of two ducts with a cross section of approximately 8' x 50', therefore, eight points of NH3 detection were required per duct to assure that NH3 slip was properly monitored. These eight points of detection in the SCR outlet duct coincided with the eight ammonia injection points in the SCR inlet duct. Only the Cemtek TDL is capable of monitoring up to eight points simultaneously and was the clear choice for DTE to order and install for their ammonia slip monitoring. In addition, the application was further challenging as the ambient temperatures where the monitors were installed continuously exceeded 150 degrees F. Cemtek was called upon to install a total of eight laser controller units with a total of 64 monitoring points.

After two years of operation, the Cemtek Model 7000 TDLs have proven to be reliable in monitoring the NH3 slip resulting in more precise, controllable ammonia injection. In addition, the Model 7000 TDL also includes an H2O measurement channel. DTE is also able to monitor this to potentially identify boiler tube leaks quicker than with traditional methods. The combination of the ammonia slip reduction and tube leak detection has helped the Monroe plant to increase operational efficiency.

Cemtek’s Model 7000 Laser Monitor is a continuous monitor designed to measure flue gases for compliance and process monitoring in the most demanding applications. The controller uses a near infrared (NIR) Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectrometer System utilizing a single mode “DFB” laser for unsurpassed accuracy and performance. Since the spectral purity of the laser is high and the selected absorption feature is unique, measurements can be made free of interferences from any other gas. The measurements are made in situ across the stack or duct in either a single or dual pass design depending upon the application. A Windows based software package is available to display the data on either a host laptop PC or the client’s existing data acquisition system.
