Heidrea for Heroes Completes Renovation Project for Plymouth Veteran

PLYMOUTH, Mass. - Feb. 10, 2015 - PRLog -- Heidrea for Heroes (www.heidrea4heroes.org),  a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources and support to military men and women facing challenges and hurdles after transitioning back to civilian life, recently completed a home renovation project for Plymouth veteran Leo Russell.

Russell, a veteran of the Vietnam War, 9^th infantry division, required an amputation of his leg in June, and before and after this point spent months at both the Bedford and Brocton VA hospitals.  During his hospitalization, Russell’s sister, Fran Russell of Marshfield, learned through Roxanne Whitbeck, Veteran’s Agent for Plymouth, that Heidrea for Heroes could help with needed renovations to ensure that Leo could stay in his home.

After learning about Russell, the organization visited his home to determine what renovations were needed to make it fully accessible. They coordinated the construction of a wheelchair ramp so that Russell could easily enter his home.  Heidrea for Heroes also ensured that the front door was enlarged, as were the bedroom and bathroom doors and a wall of a narrow hallway was removed. Another bedroom was transformed into a laundry room to allow for a first-floor washer and dryer, and carpeting was replaced to allow for easier wheelchair passage.

According to Fran Russell, “The group really went way beyond to help Leo feel at home, and showed that they really genuinely care.”  Additional touches included rearranging furniture, finding a 9^th infantry flag, installing a new American flag outside, and hanging a Christmas wreath.  Leo Russell came home on December 23, 2014.

“I was astounded,” said Leo Russell upon coming home.  “I couldn’t believe that someone would do this, and they did such a beautiful, very high-quality job.  It was custom-made for me, and I can’t thank them enough.”

Jesse Brown, co-founder of Heidrea for Heroes, said, “We are so happy to be able to help Leo.  It’s not uncommon for veterans to need some additional help upon returning home from a long hospital stay, and we are glad to have the opportunity to make this transition easier for one of our country’s heroes.”
