The O₂ London chooses Koledo Posterbox Modules

In total, 120 promotional billboards in the O₂ Arena in London were installed and illuminated with the Koledo LED Affinium Posterbox 410.

LONDON - Feb. 10, 2015 - PRLog -- Background
The Millennium Dome opened its doors on 1 January 2000 to mark the beginning of the new millennium. In 2007 the Millennium Dome was renamed, and since then it’s been known as the O₂ Arena. The O₂ has a diameter of 365 meters and a seating capacity of 20,000, making it the biggest dome building in the world!

Inside the arena itself, is a ring with over 120 promotional billboards. These carry the names and logos of a number of commercial sponsors. During construction, T12 fluorescent tubes were used to illuminate these billboards. Back then, these were considered a modern, high-tech solution. However, the life span of these T12 tubes was not as good as anticipated. This, coupled with the sheer number of concerts and sports games held at the O₂ - more than 250 evenings a year - necessitated a lot of T12 lamp replacements.  Part of the problem is caused by the constant switching on and off of lights. Although this is common practice in many situations, it influences the lifespan of this type of lamp.

To circumvent this problem, the maintenance team of the O₂ had to carry out several lamp replacements, which proved a very time-consuming and complicated undertaking. The commercial billboards are not easy to reach or open, and a broken lamp is not something that commercial partners like to see.

In view of ongoing innovations in the lighting industry over the past 14 years and the growing prominence of LED lighting, the O₂ maintenance team asked their partner Philips Lighting UK to come up with an improved, high-quality solution. LED technology significantly reduces energy bills as well as installation and replacement costs.

Challenge
The O₂ wanted to replace all billboard lighting in one go, and approached Philips Lighting UK to devise a solution. Philips is renowned for its energy efficient and environmentally friendly lighting solutions, and came up with a professional LED billboard illumination. Philips Lighting UK contacted Koledo to design and find a solution that could be used in a mutual project.

The squared frames that are used in the O₂ could be illuminated with Koledo’s standard solution, the Posterbox 400 series. As a lot of large-scale projects are executed with these Posterboxes, Koledo knew instinctively that this product would be the best solution. To demonstrate the benefits of our LED products to the O₂ team, a number of theoretical solutions were fleshed out, such as energy savings and installation guides.

Demo materials of the Posterbox 400 series 6 LED were shipped to the O₂, and these were installed as a real-life test. Despite the improvements, installing the 6 LED Posterbox versions nevertheless proved a time-consuming undertaking for the O₂ team; an even more efficient, less convoluted solution was needed. This prompted Koledo to come up with a ‘special’ project version: a posterbox with 10 LEDs instead of the regular 4 or 6 LEDs in a standard Posterbox.

Solution

The Posterbox 410 (with color temperature 6500 Kelvin) seemed the perfect solution for the billboards in the O₂. Maintenance has been reduced to a minimum, and instant energy savings of up to 60% have been generated. In total, 120 billboards in the O₂ were installed and illuminated with the Koledo Affinium Posterbox 410. For each billboard, an average of 5 Posterboxes were used, as all billboards have different sizes. Prior to mounting, the model and size of each billboard was examined to create a unique installation guide. This ensured that the Posterboxes could be installed as effortlessly and as efficiently as possible.

Benefits
Because the Posterboxes have a life span of 50,000 (!) hours, the O₂ maintenance team doesn’t need to replace the Posterbox 410 as much as the fluorescent tubes. As well as achieving impressive energy-efficient results and savings on replacement / maintenance, the actual time spent replacing defective lamps is kept to an absolute minimum.

The T12 tubes have an average of 50 Lm/W, whereas for the Posterboxes the lumen output is close to 100 lm/W. This ensures a brighter light. Furthermore, the billboards are illuminated more equally as the Posterboxes are placed at the top and bottom of the frames. The specially designed lens ensures crisp and bright light distribution across the entire front.
