Non-Profit Shows Promise in Supporting Children with Communication & Social Challenges with Upcoming Carnival

PHOENIX, Feb. 6,2015 – MORIAH Cooperative Inc. announced its first ever MORIAH Carnival would open with tremendous fanfare on Feb. 22, 2015 and after just one week of entries, the carnival has reached maximum enrollment. With assistance from local philanthropic volunteer collective, Caring Neighbors, MORIAH will facilitate an inclusion-based carnival, focused on supporting children with special needs and their families. This carnival event is being made possible by the generosity of kindhearted volunteers and donors within the community.

Using peer mentoring and social activities throughout the carnival, MORIAH encourages the development of interpersonal communication, relationship development and exposure to learning between children. MORIAH anticipates a combination of 25 peer mentor groups, pairing 25 children with special needs and 25 slightly older mentors at the event. Also, an additional 80 support volunteers and family members are planned to be on site.

Through the use of fun activity stations and games, peer mentors and attendees will establish a social bond under the professional guidance of educators and therapists. Parents, siblings and other community volunteers will setup and maintain carnival activity stations while supporting the mentor pairs.  By using engaging activities, MORIAH strives to foster an understanding and acceptance between all children.

“We are excited MORIAH’s social programming is aligned with the needs of so many families.  It is our intent to reach children, independent of diagnosis or financial constraints that will benefit from socialization with friends,” MORIAH’s Executive Director, Brett Bernstein said.

Aside from MORIAH’s social programming, the organization makes scholarships available for children with special needs who may be financially disadvantaged to attend social groups or camps.

About MORIAH: As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity, MORIAH was founded on the principle that every child deserves the opportunity to maximize their individual potential, MORIAH collaborates with families, community partners, and professional service providers to fully satisfy this social contract.  Serving children to the age of 18 years old, MORIAH serves many who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), down syndrome, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, developmental delays, speech & language impairments, attention deficit disorder (ADD), or intellectual disabilities.
