The Real Cannonball ~ World's Most Extreme Motor-Scooter Endurance Race

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. - Feb. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- When Motor-Scooter International announced The Real Cannonball ~ World’s Most Extreme Motor-Scooter Endurance Race in 2012, at least one motor-scooter forum’s owner took umbrage to the use of the word “Real” as disparaging a certain annual scooter rally. He immediately received strong support from both participants and non-participants of this event who apparently fancied themselves as racers. This animosity hasn’t abated even though it should be patently clear to all concerned the event in question is not – by any stretch of the imagination – a race.

The organizer, Patrick Owens, MSILSF World Motor-Scooter Land-Speed Record Holder, bills his 10-day “Cannonball Run” (Scooter Cannonball) thusly:

“The Scooter Cannonball Run is a coast to coast endurance event for scooters. It is a test of both rider and machine that covers 3500 miles and takes in some of the best motorcycle roads on the North American continent. It will be run as a time/distance/regularity rally where points are awarded based on miles completed and the ability to maintain the standard pace.

The Pre 1937 Motorcycle Cannonball makes no pretense its event is a rally:

“ . . . Our goal was for all days to be at most 300 miles, but in some areas there just aren't enough cities at appropriate locations with sufficient hotel rooms for a group our size. Two days are longer, both are after the rest day. The typical schedule for a 300 mile day ,assuming the motorcycle maintains 50 mph on straight flat roads, will be an 8:00 am start and a 4:00 pm finish, for a total of 8 hours on the road. . .”
