Jordan Messler, MD, Named Glycemic Mentor of Heywood Diabetes Center of Excellence

GARDNER, Mass. - Feb. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- (Gardner, MA) - The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) has announced that Jordan Messler, MD, of Clearwater, Florida has been named as the Glycemic Mentor for Heywood Healthcare’s Diabetes Center of Excellence.

Jordan Messler, MD, FHM, completed his medical education at Emory University. Dr. Messler went on to become an Assistant Professor at the University until 2005. Since, he has worked at Incompass Health, serving as the Medical Director for the Morton Plant Hospitalist group in Clearwater, Florida. Dr. Messler is well known for his leadership in system wide improvement projects related to Diabetes Management, VTE prophylaxis and improved care transitions. Currently, he is the Chair of SHM’s Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Committee. Additionally, Dr. Messler has mentored in SHM’s Glycemic Control Mentored Implementation Program and Project BOOST.

The SHM Glycemic Control Mentored Implementation (GCMI) Program supports the development and implementation of glycemic control programs at hospitals nationwide.  The ultimate goal of the program is to optimize the care of inpatients with hyperglycemia and diabetes and to prevent hypoglycemia. The program has become more and more popular within the hospital community and has done tremendous work for hyperglycemic and diabetes patients.

In June 2012, Win Brown, President and CEO of Heywood Healthcare, announced Heywood Hospital’s plan to create a Diabetes Center of Excellence.


Since then, the Heywood Hospital Diabetes Strategic Planning Committee has been worked to achieve and maintain Diabetes Center of Excellence status. In 2013, Heywood Healthcare established a Diabetes Center of Excellence at Athol Hospital, based off the successful program piloted in Gardner.

In October 2014, Heywood Healthcare announced the decision to partner with the SHM in implementing the Glycemic Control Mentored Implementation Program.  The Mentorship program will consist of monthly teleconferences with physicians overseeing the care of hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of diabetes.

Additionally educational opportunities and web based tools will be used to strengthen existing care policies and procedures moving forward.
