SAN DIEGO - Feb. 4, 2015 - PRLog -- When Mrs. Jennie Hamilton, Executive Director of Community Actors Theater, asked if changes could be made in the script because several of the actors thought the dialogue to be "offensive", understanding being one of the main themes of the work, author Floyd Stephen Alexander gladly complied, but made it clear that the colorful language reflected the time in which the play was set. Said Alexander: “The words dictate the attitudes of the people during Mr. Baldwin’s time. The “N” word was widely spoken in the racially-charged civil rights era. The “F” word to describe the gay citizenry was widely used as well, however now we are aware of the pain and discomfort those words can trigger and discourage their use.” BALDWIN: PORTRAIT OF A WRITER is a well-crafted theatrical production profiling the life odyssey of famed social activist and noted writer, James Baldwin. Born poor and reared to become a Baptist preacher like his religiously devoted father, Baldwin sees education as his salvation: “A lack of knowledge can contribute to a lack of faith. When I grabbed a book that told about me, I knew I would never look at myself the same way again.”

One of the production’s highlights is recreating the historic debate between Baldwin, the liberal fire-brand and William F. Buckley, the conservative standard-bearer on the question of the American Dream being created at the expense of the Negro race. This scene is destined to bring the audience to their feet.

The play’s creator, Floyd Stephen Alexander, has penned over eight theater manuscripts that are on record at the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theater Research Institute at the Ohio State University Theater Department.

"BALDWIN: PORTRAIT OF A WRITER" is a must see for Black History Month!
