Edwin Powell Launches Campaign for DC Council Ward 4 Seat

WASHINGTON - Jan. 29, 2015 - PRLog -- Edwin Powell formally launches his campaign for the D.C. Council. He is contesting the Ward 4 seat vacated by Mayor Muriel Bowser this past November. Dr. Powell is a professor at Howard University College of Medicine and a mental health legal expert with the District of Columbia Superior Court. He currently serves on the D.C. Human Rights Commission.

Powell has strong ties to his community and is a longtime resident of Colonial Village. Throughout his professional life – formerly as a public school principal and currently through his work at Howard University, as a Superior Court legal expert and a Human Rights Commissioner – he has proven to be a leader and an advocate for those most in need. His dedication to children, the elderly, and the working class is particularly exemplary of the kind of leadership he will bring to City Hall as the Ward 4 Councilman.

“Together with the voters of Ward 4, I intend to take our city politics in a new direction so that we can focus on creating better job opportunities for our young adults and take better care of our seniors… And renew our commitment to our kids’ quality education beyond merely renovating school buildings,” Powell states.

Recently, Dr. Powell introduced the D.C. Character Development and Citizenship Education Initiative of 2014 (DC Board of Elections Initiative Measure No. 75).  Through this legislation, our schools will be tasked with educating our young about critical issues such as community violence, bullying, drug use and other similar concerns.  “I will continue to work on making sure this initiative is adopted in order to improve character and behavior development in our schools,” Powell continues.

Among the many goals outlined in his campaign platform, Dr. Powell is committed to improving public education for children in Ward 4 and throughout the District of Columbia by raising standards and access to quality educational opportunities; create better job opportunities for the young through on-the-job training programs and targeted business tax incentives; and provide more affordable housing including tax breaks for senior citizens. He supports increasing the number of Great Streets Small Business Capital Improvement Grants and using Tax Increment Financing (TIFs) to attract green and clean energy investment to the District.

“Promoting small business growth, closing the educational achievement gap, creating more and better jobs, ensuring safe neighborhoods and communities, and advocating for our seniors will be my priorities and promises I will keep as Councilman,” Powell concludes.
