Jan. 28, 2015 - PRLog -- llinois Bone & Joint Institute’s Dr. Leon Benson joins WBEZ 91.5 Chicago during the "Morning Shift" to discuss winter related injuries and tips on how to avoid them.

As temperatures rise over the 30’s more runners and outdoor sports enthusiasts are making their way back outside after the frigid weather from early January. But, we’re not in the clear just yet. Winter weather can still lead to injuries. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Leon Benson offers tips on how to keep your body safe when you hit the running or snow trail.

The most common winter related injuries involve collisions at high speeds which include head injuries and broken bones. Unexpected slick surfaces in the morning due to the significant drop in temperatures overnight can also lead to many injuries. There are also more subtle injuries that can occur, like skin exposure (frostbite or even sunburn) or repetitive ligament injuries.

Dr. Benson discusses the 3 principles for avoiding injuries that apply to individuals of all ages and skill or experience levels including:

- Master the skills
- Understand the risks
- Use the appropriate gear
