Entertainment Television Producer Uses Media to Serve Areas in West Africa

NEW YORK - Jan. 28, 2015 - PRLog -- Niamey, Niger— Television producer, Kim Selden, has partnered with the U.S. Embassy in Niger to conduct media service programs in rural communities in the West African country. “As global as our society is becoming, there are large groups that continue to suffer without the economic ability to join more advanced countries in the digital revolution. I want to help close the digital divide,” exclaims Selden.

A then Long Island University Masters student Kim Selden, created the Global Media Service Learning Project in 2012 after a 2 month trip to Niamey. The start-up non-profit serves underdeveloped communities worldwide through media education, technology and service learning programs. The program equips students with transferrable production skills, challenges their perceptions through global awareness and team building, and charges them to create original content based on their experiences.

After receiving a grant from the embassy in Niamey, the producer turned activist banned with a group of young professionals in the U.S. to plan GMP’s inaugural media service assessment trip in February 2015. The multi-cultural exchange program uplifts the community by providing sustainable solutions like solar radios so people in rural areas have access to vital information. The group will also host mobile film screenings and provide production training for a local radio station.

Despite the unrest stemming from the outrage over the recent cover of French magazine, Charlie Hebdo, GMP aims to aid an ailing community through open and positive dialogue, fostering discussions about peace, education, health and economics from the perspective of their own community. “Not only are we providing access to information, we are training the community to create content using their own voice,” the media activist explains.

Kimberly Renee Selden is a New York-based television producer, whose credits include: Oprah Behind the Scenes, Food Networks’ “Next Food Star”, The Victoria Secret Fashion Show, MTV’s Video Music Awards, NBA All Star, and more. Now, the Founder and Executive Director of The Global Media Project, she continues to work towards the advancement of women and minorities using media convergence as her main tool.
