Jan. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES, CA (January 2015) - The sold out Cupcakes and Coils event, which marks the first of a series, provided an intimate opportunity for actress Kimberly Elise to invite top stylists, Aingeel-Z and Tonya Thompson, to share their expertise with a group of women about managing and maintaining natural black hair.

Birthed out of Elise’s advocacy for women to be and feel naturally themselves, the event allowed guests to participate in an engaging two-hour workshop and conversation on the basics of natural hair care and weave maintenance.

“Through my website, I am constantly getting questions from my fans about how I care for my natural hair, and other issues specific to natural hair textures. Rather than just answering emails, I wanted to speak to women directly, and connect them to strong hairstylists and educators, women who I’ve worked with professionally, trust. I’d like to create a community of inspired, empowered, beautiful women who know how to nurture their own natural beauty both inside and out,” said the accomplished actress.

A four-time NAACP Image Award recipient and the star of VH1’s television drama Hit The Floor, which will premiere season three in the summer of 2015, Kimberly Elise is praised for often taking on roles that positively portray women of color.  Most recently, Kimberly also starred in the television drama “Apple Mortgage Cake,” which premiered on Up Network, and is the network’s highest grossing television drama to date. In 2014, she starred in “A Day Late and A Dollar Short” alongside Whoopi Goldberg.

The first event was themed “Back To The Basics”: Guests learned how to identify their correct hair textures, how to identify which products were suitable for their hair type, how to identify safe hair ingredients, and how to care for sew-in weaves.

Panelists included Tonya Thompson, owner of DreamGirls Fine Hair Imports & Salon and weave specialist who has worked with Elise on Hit the Floor, as well as natural hairstylistAingeel–Z of Natural Kinz & Waves Hair Salon. The stylists inspired the audience of women to grow beautiful, healthy hair through proper care and correct knowledge.

Guests also noshed on vegan black velvet cupcakes courtesy of Southern Girl Sweets during the event and departed with generous gift bags filled with products from Karen’s Body Beautiful and Infinity Bath and Body. Three lucky participants went home with a copy of Sunne’s Gift by Ama Karikari Yawson.
