Jan. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — Researchers have developed a new biomaterial that has the potential to rebuild enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.

Scientists from Taiwan, who published the findings of their study online in ACS Nano, say they have developed a novel durable paste based on calcium and phosphorous, which could repair damaged enamel and provide longer lasting relief from tooth sensitivity than current treatments.

Even though tooth enamel is the hardest and most highly mineralized substance in the body, it is still susceptible to erosion as we age.

Dr. Greg Rubin, of the Calabasas Dental Institute, says that many patients may suffer from enamel loss and tooth sensitivity due to a variety of factors including oral health, and nutrition. He says a diet that consists of acidic foods like lemons and carbonated, sugary drinks can cause the erosion of enamel, while eating foods rich in calcium and phosphorous such as milk, cheese, kale, broccoli or bok choy that contain antioxidants can strengthen enamel.

“The erosion of tooth enamel is caused by several factors, nutrition being the biggest one,” Dr. Greg Rubin said. “Paying attention to what you eat can really make a difference not only in your overall health, but oral health as well.”

The researchers, from National Taiwan University, National Yang-Ming University, and National Cheng Kung University, say while current treatments such as special sealants may block the openings of tiny, porous tubes that are exposed when enamel erodes, the treatments are unable to withstand daily wear and tear of brushing and chewing.

In the study, the researchers applied their mixture to canine teeth and found that it plugged exposed tubes deeper than other treatments. They say this depth could be vital in repairing enamel and providing long lasting sensitivity relief, they concluded.
