Mental Health Alert: A Surprising - And All Natural - Way To Boost Your Mood

With winter comes the winter blues. More and more doctors are recommending a suprising - and all natural - approach to boosting your mood.

TORRANCE, Calif. - Jan. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- For a while, the field of psychiatry was all about drugs to fix emotional chemistry. Now things are changing . . . As in other fields of medicine, more doctors are realizing the positive impact nutrition has on mental health. And increasingly, more doctors are advocating strategic nutrition over drugs in fighting the blues.

“Food can have an enormous impact on our entire body chemistry,” says holistic doctor Michael E. Rosenbaum, MD. “And in particular, food can impact the parts of our biochemistry - like the brain and hormones - that affect our mood. But you have to be strategic. Depression can twist even the best intentions into a craving for potato chips. Like many healthy strategies, you have to override your initial impulse and go with what you know is good for you - like a healthy meal. The lift in mood will follow!”

B vitamins are critical for a good mood. In an article published in the Journal of Neuroscience and Psychiatry, researcher Simon Young challenged mental health researchers to take a different tact when it comes to depression. As Young explained, too many studies on depression focus on a relatively small cause of this mental health problem - genetics.

Instead, he urged researchers to spend more time on the much more common link between nutritional deficiencies and the blues. As he pointed out, close to a third of people who are battling depression are low in the B vitamin, folate. And according to a few small studies, boosting folate intake may help with depression.

Since 1998, folic acid has been added to all breads and cereals. With 36 micrograms per serving, chlorella is a good source of folic acid. Liver, spinach, asparagus and Brussel sprouts also offer a nice dose of this water-soluble B vitamin.

“Folate isn’t the only B vitamin that buoys your mood,” notes Dr. Rosenbaum. “Vitamin B12 is also a major mood-booster. And together, folate and B12 seem to play crucial roles in regulating your brain chemistry. A 2003 case study published in a Scandinavian medical journal describes how a 57-year old woman recovered beautifully from severe depression and psychosis after she regained normal B12 blood levels through supplementation. Shockingly, testing and treating her for a B12 deficiency didn’t occur to anyone until after she was given anti-psychotic drugs, antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy.”

As holistic psychiatrist, Dr. Kelly Brogan explains, B12 may support brain health by regulating homocysteine levels and by managing gene expression as a methyl donor.

In a Finnish study of 115 people getting treatment for depression, researchers found that the people with the highest levels of B12 in their blood after 6 weeks also had the most success in beating the blues.

Depression isn’t the only brain-drain B12 fights off. It also has been linked to improving memory and overall brain performance for all ages.

Looking for a good source of B12? It’s almost exclusively found in animal sources, like eggs, meat or dairy. However, chlorella is one of the few plant sources of the form of B12 the human body can use.

“You may not need to turn to drugs to lift your mood!” asserts Dr. Rosenbaum. “As you now know, B vitamins can help your body deal with stress better, change your brain chemistry and even make you sharper! Chlorella algae is a great source for both of these. Particularly if you're vegetarian or vegan. When you mix this B-boost with other mood enhancing activities like a funny movie, a nice walk and a good night's sleep, you’ll start to feel a new, zesty you coming on!”
