CHICAGO - Jan. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- (CHICAGO) --  Alderman William D. (Will) Burns (http://www.friendsofwillburns.com), candidate for re-election as Alderman of the 4th Ward,  participated in a whirlwind week of campaign activities and secured two crucial endorsements. Wednesday of last week, the Chicago Federation of Labor (http://www.chicagolabor.org) (CFL) announced that they are supporting Burns in his re-election as Alderman for the 4th Ward of Chicago.  On Sunday night the  Independent Voters of Illinois - Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO) (http://www.iviipo.org) also voiced their support with a unanimous vote, after hearing presentations from the three candidates vying for the position.

“I am deeply honored by both of these  endorsements.  It is a recognition of the work we’ve done the past three years to make the 4th Ward a community of choice for all residents,” said Burns.

As a reminder that progress continues in the 4th Ward, on Thursday Alderman Will Burns joined Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Alderman Pat Dowell and Bob Mariano, chairman and CEO of Roundy’s, Inc., at a ground breaking ceremony for the newest Mariano’s grocery store at the intersection of 39th Street and King Drive in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood. The development is a joint venture that includes African American investors and the store design is by an African American architect.  It is the first Mariano’s to break ground on the south side and 40% of construction contracts to build the store will go to African American owned business enterprises,  creating over 200 construction-related jobs and 400 permanent jobs, all while increasing the availability of fresh and healthy foods for residents when it opens in 2016. Also attending the ‘groundbreaking’ were the  Oakwood Boulevard Neighbors Association (OBNA), the Bronzeville Neighborhood Collaborative (BNC) as well as Bishop E. Horace Smith, M.D. of Apostolic Faith Church.

Sunday, January 11, Burns hosted the opening of his campaign office at 900 E. 47th Street where more than 100 supporters, volunteers and community residents attended the event and joined the Alderman in making calls to other potential campaign supporters.  Among those in attendance were Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, State Representative Christian L. Mitchell (D - 26th District) and former 4th Ward Alderman Shirley Newsome.

The Coalition for Equitable Community Development’s (http://www.hpkcoalition.org) (CECD) Candidate Forum was the first of campaign events held on Saturday, January 10. During the Forum, Burns summarized why he is  running for reelection.  “My office helps people. That is what this job allows me to do.  I’m excited about all the new housing, excited about all the new businesses, excited from the increasing vitality that we’re seeing, not just in Hyde Park but in Grand Boulevard, in Douglas, in every part of the 4th Ward.  But, ultimately, what we’re doing is saving peoples’ lives, we’re giving people opportunity and we’re making sure the city of Chicago is open and accessible to them.  For that reason, I hope you’ll elect me to another term as Alderman of the 4th Ward."

The general election will be held Tuesday, February 24th and early voting begins Monday, February 9th.  For more information about the campaign, or to volunteer, please visit www.friendsofwillburns.com or contact Jazmine Johnson at the campaign office, 773-916-6605.
