By: Women Veterans ROCK! "We couldn't do what we do to save lives and lead the fight against breast cancer without these organizations pursing their own missions with such dedication," "Together with Komen Philadelphia, these organizations weave the fabric of women's health, women's wellbeing, and women's prosperity," A group of Komen Philadelphia advisors, including Board Members, leadership and respected members of the local community-service arena, selected the list of 25 Women's Champion honorees, a first-ever recognition. In choosing the honorees, they looked for well-respected individual organizations that exclusively or primarily serve women in a geographic area similar to that of Komen Philadelphia. They also looked to create a Women's Champion group that, on the whole, represents a balance of services vital to women, serve a healthy diversity of populations and cultures, and focus on meeting immediate needs as well building solid foundations for prosperous futures. Women Veterans ROCK! was chosen over other local organizations with a similar mission based on their high standards of use of donor dollars, the integrity of their mission and vision, consistency of achievement, respect in the community, and track record of working in ways that complement other non-profit work. "We are honored to have been chosen as an organization of integrity by an organization that itself is so well respected and has helped paved the way to revolutionizing the face of breast cancer in our world," said Deborah Harmon-Pugh, Campaign Chair of Women Veterans ROCK! "So often organizations like ours are seen for what we do in our specific service mission – it is truly special to be considered an integral part of something bigger and to be recognized as a foundation of women's past, present and future growth." Komen Philadelphia chose its milestone 25th Celebration Race for the Cure to present and celebrate the twenty-five Women's Champions in order to further demonstrate how its past was very much shaped by the work of other non-profit organizations. "While it is true this is a milestone year for us, Komen Philadelphia very purposely chose to make ours a celebration of the community of which we are part," said Grobman. "This is a first-and-only presentation for the Women's Champion Awards. We chose this historic time so we can leverage the momentum of our 25th Race Celebration in order to bring recognition and support in the form of awareness for all twenty-five organizations." The Women's Champion Awards will be presented at the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure Kick-Off Party the evening of Friday, February 6 at Vie in Philadelphia. Komen Philadelphia also plans to continue to celebrate the twenty-five organizations throughout the Race season, which will climax at the event on Mother's Day (May 10, 2015).
