NYSL Promotions on Setting and Achieving Goals in 2015

FAIRFIELD, N.J. - Jan. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- “Resolutions are easy to make. What’s not so easy is turning resolutions into reality,” explained Joe, NYSL Promotions’ director of operations. “Many people and businesses alike end up making the same resolutions every year because they failed to set goals and then achieve them. In order to avoid this trap, we’re setting SMART goals this year.”

Joe went on to talk about how the word SMART in this case is a useful acronym for setting goals that are both lofty and attainable. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. “I took this idea and gave some serious thought to what I thought we could achieve this year. First, I want to be the leading marketing company in North Jersey, offering innovative, trackable, successful marketing plans to our clients. Second, I want to continue to grow our own company, increase our marketing teams, and develop strong leaders and managers who will ensure we not only hit our goal and numbers but go beyond, for ourselves and our clients.”

Joe feels these are intermediate goals, and clarified the difference between these and other objectives he sets for the firm. “Long-term goals are what set the tone and direction of an organization and also define the parameters of other goals,” Joe clarified. “They are like the final destination of a journey, and they can take many years to achieve. Short-term goals are the immediate action steps that an organization can take toward the fulfillment of a long-term goal. Intermediate goals, to massage the roadmap analogy, are like the longer legs of the journey between meal breaks and rest stops. These create momentum toward the achievement of long-term goals, and should take less than a year but more than a month.”

“Of course, now that we have the goals we need to figure out how to make them happen,” Joe emphasized. “One of the first and most powerful techniques I use to help the organization move forward is to create a visual representation of the goal. This can be a great team-building exercise as well; sometimes we’ll make a collage board or everyone will contribute to a large mural. The point is to have our goals be not just words on a paper, but instead to have a way of visualizing the reality in which those objectives have been achieved.”

Once the targets are clearly pictured, Joe likes to keep talking about them. Keeping an open conversation going about what he’s trying to accomplish communicates his commitment to everyone, including himself. “It’s amazing how eager people are to see you achieve your dreams when you know what they are and aren’t afraid to talk about them.”

Also, Joe talks about the value of taking these bigger ambitions and turning them into daily action steps. It can become disheartening to work day in and day out on a goal that might take months to achieve without seeing any measurable results, Joe said, so seeing positive outcomes on a daily basis helps people maintain motivation.

Finally, he puts a deadline on his intentions. “Setting a date by which something needs to be achieved lends that idea a sense of urgency. It gives you even more to work toward as well: rather than some vague someday, you have that day by which to finish.”
