India themed bio-pic script, I.E., wins the Monaco Film Festival best screenplay award

British screenplay writer Neil’ O Neil based the script on Anglo Indian girl Jillian Haslam’s searing auto-biography

New Delhi, January, 19th, 2014:
Celebrated British screenplay writer added another feather to his cap by winning the prestigious Best Screenplay Award in the Epic/Historical category. Titled I.E., Neil’s script is based on the much acclaimed auto biography of Jillian Haslam, Indian. English- A Memoir. Jillian’s was a tale of gritty survival and ultimate redemption by a small girl of English origin marooned on the meant streets of Kolkata in a stridently parochial post independence India.

Her tale had chronicled her childhood struggles of survival, where she and her family survived by occasional acts of kindness shown by the poorest Indians. The book ends with her returning to her ancestral roots in England, as a successful, banker and philanthropist with her heart full of love for the country of her birth.

Neil’s script takes the story forward and showcases her as an agent of change and transformation in the West, drawing inspiration from the traumatic and yet cathartic experiences of her childhood in India. Says Neil, “The inspiration for this script came from Jillian herself. Her incredibly eventful life conveys a message of hope and redemption to anybody who is dealing with a bad situation. I want this script to be turned into a movie that will possibly impact the world the way Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi did.”

Jillian herself is quite happy about this prestigious award won by Neil, and hopes that it helps the movie project takes off. “My motivation behind the movie being made is twofold. I want to reach out a message of hope to the most despondent and desperate people, so that they can find the courage to give life their best shot, no matter what situation they face. Secondly if the film makes decent profits the money so generated would go into my charitable endeavours geared towards helping people back home in India.”
