Jan. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- London January 14th 2015: With malnutrition in the form of under-nutrition and obesity increasingly affecting people across the world in all different economic situations, it is clear that the issue of food security and nutrition must be addressed now to avoid a deepening of this global crisis in future.

On February 12th, 2015 in Amsterdam, The Economist Events will once again assemble the most respected names from agribusiness, policy, international agencies, science and the NGO community to discuss the measures that need to be taken.

Confirmed speakers include: Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Government of the Netherlands; Michael Gidney, Chief Executive, Fairtrade Foundation; Sue Carlson, Leader, Women’s Committee, World Farmers Organisation; Prem Warrior, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Member of the Board of Directors, Valagro,  Nick von Westenholz, Chief Executive Officer, Crop Protection Association and Marc Van Ameringen, Executive Director, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

Key topics up for debate include a review of the Millennium Development Goals and an analysis of how the subsequent Sustainable Development Goals can be used as a tool for development; possible solutions to the perennial challenges of both under-nutrition and over-consumption; the role of women in tackling the global challenge of food and nutrition security; climate change and sustainable agriculture.

“It will take the collective efforts of all of us—across every sector and region of the world—to sustainably address, and meet, the growing global demands on agriculture. We believe that bringing diverse perspectives to the table is the most effective way to develop creative solutions, and The Economist Events’ Feeding the World summit will serve as a platform for these important conversations. Whilst we are aware of the challenges, it’s an exciting time for agriculture and we look forward to partnering with this community and others as we all continue to work to achieve global food and nutrition security.” – commented Mike Frank, Vice-president, Global Commercial Lead, Monsanto.

Chaired by The Economist Environment Editor, John Parker, the event will assemble more than 150 senior executives from around the world representing agribusiness, food manufacturing, policy, international agencies, science and the NGO community. Together they will examine the implications of the tremendous increase in food demand and changing food patterns as well as the measures that need to be taken to achieve food and nutrition security.

A unique EU-funded photo exhibition, “The Family Meal: What brings us together?” will be shown at the summit. Photographer Chris Terry went in search of the ingredients of the family meal, visiting families in five countries on three continents receiving food assistance from the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP).

Feeding the World is organised by The Economist Events’ and sponsored by Monsanto, SealedAir, GAIN and Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network.
