Leadership Memphis & Clean Memphis Mobilize 350 Residents to Serve on King Holiday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Jan. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- Memphis, Tenn. (January 17, 2015) – Hundreds of Memphis residents will step up to serve as volunteers on the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. 350 volunteers will collaborate with Leadership Memphis and Clean Memphis across eight local Shelby County Schools to clear their path to and from their way home from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., January 19.

Volunteers include area Shelby County Schools students, Leadership Memphis alumni, and community advocates.

Leadership Memphis and Clean Memphis planned a day of service that will leverage the strength of local citizens to help tackle local problems including littering and advance King’s dream of opportunity for all. The 350 volunteers will be spread across eight area high schools that are part of Leadership Memphis’ SUCCESS High Schools action initiative, which include: Melrose, Carver, Fairley, Hamilton, Kirby, East, Trezevant, and Kingsbury high schools.

“With Leadership Memphis SUCCESS High Schools, we not only prepare students for college and careers with our Executive Program, we also mobilize their classes for civic engagement across multiple community service opportunities. Partnering with Clean Memphis gives students a chance to see the impact of environmental responsibility,” said Andrew Bartolotta, marketing and communications coordinator for Leadership Memphis.

“Today we answer Dr. King’s call to serve and are making an impact in the lives of local residents,” said Jacqueline Oselen, Programs Coordinator at Leadership Memphis. “A resourceful way to meet local needs, volunteer service is a powerful tool that builds strong communities. We are putting the core American principles of citizenship and service into action.”

Leadership Memphis and Clean Memphis Staff will facilitate the cleanups at each location. If you are looking to take impactful footage at the cleanups, Melrose High School is scheduled to have 175 participants. Carver, Fairley, and Hamilton each have 75 registered.

Clean Memphis is a non-profit, founded in 2008, by a group of concerned citizens whose goal is to make Memphis the cleanest city in the country. Their three program platforms include Support Community Partnership, High-Profile Cleanup Sweeps, and comprehensive environmental education program for all schools in Shelby County.
