By: Theivasanthi The idea is to develop a bio-fertilizer product based on nano-biotechnology that will release nitrogen for plantsand help to using it in a better manner / develop a new generation fertilizer with more efficiency. Plants struggle to get more nitrogen from the soil. Conventional fertilizers are boosting nitrogen levels of soil for a small extent, since most of them are destroyed by water or wind before being used by plants. She explained in a research article (Nano sized Powder of Jackfruit Seed: Spectroscopic and Anti-microbial Investigative Approach) that jackfruit seed contains various elements like carbon, oxygen, magnesium, aluminium, phosphorous, potassium, titanium, iron, nickel and molybdenum. Carbon, oxygen and phosphorous are constituents of amino-acids. Plants chlorophyll has a magnesium atom. Aluminium and nickel are essential for enzymes. Potassium plays an important role in the growth of plants. In some plants, titanium is used in chemical energy production. Molybdenum is especially important for plants to fix nitrogen. Soils that have no molybdenum are generally unfit to support plant life. Plant cells are larger than nanomaterials and 10 to 100 μm are their normal size range. Jackfruit seed nanoparticles have size 12 nm, Surface Area 462 nm2, Specific Surface Area 625 m2 g-1. Increasing surface area means increasing site of action. The prepared nanoparticles have large surface area and size smaller than plant cells. So that, they will easily enter into plant cells and will exhibit more actions. She said, fertilisers made from bio-organic wastes increase soil’s ability to hold moisture and nutrients. They keep the soil relatively healthy through rigorous application of organic techniques. Also, they attract earthworms, the helper of soil aeration and natural fertilization. Jackfruit seed is a bio-material generally discarded as waste but its nanoparticles can be utilised as a nano-fertiliser. Methionine, an essential amino acid of human nutrition is also an effective insecticide against caterpillars. 100 g jack fruit seed raw ingredients contain 260 mg of Methionine. Utilizing such an alternative method instead of chemical pesticides is safe to environment. She further added that the recent initiation of Indian Government Clean Indian Mission’s objective is 100% collection and scientific processing/disposal reuse/recycle of Municipal Solid Waste. I expect helps from this initiative/ the Government for further research on using and recycling of organic waste disposal in an effective manner such as nano-fertiliser.
