BURY, U.K. - Jan. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- Thermal processing specialist, the Wallwork Group has expanded and upgraded the high vacuum heat treatment department at its Birmingham site with an investment of £2 million in new plant and a building upgrade. Building improvement were made with grant assistance from Birmingham City Council, enabling the company to totally refurbish the department to provide a modern and highly efficient facility for flexible, cost effective heat treatment. Modern furnaces of different capacities flexibly handle both high volume and small batch metal components.

Site director Tim Pelari explained, “We are problem solvers, it is not just a case of following a specification. When we fully understand how, where and why the component is to be used we can sometimes offer a better or more appropriate treatment. This approach may lead to an immediate cost reduction, where a heat treatment has been over specified or longer term savings where a better process improves performance and endurance to reduce life-time component cost. Our highly qualified and experienced laboratory staff have the metallurgical expertise to complete the process with comprehensive testing and documentation for quality assurance and the traceability required by aerospace, motorsport, nuclear and other demanding industries.”

Each furnace has a Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS) in accordance with a pre-determined schedule to ensure that it conforms with the System Accuracy Test (SAT) as part of Wallwork’s continuing compliance certification for the aerospace and automotive industries.

Seven vacuum machines ranging from 250Kg to four tonnes load capacity are run 24/7 to ensure fast turnaround of orders, often the day after collection. This includes one of the largest such furnaces in the UK, capable of handling loads in excess of 2.7 cubic metres.

Wallwork operate a dedicated vehicle fleet to ensure door-to-door service and security throughout the UK. The department can handle anything from small pressed or machined parts to large forgings.

Employment at the Birmingham site has grown by seven posts as the new investment has taken place. “We have a good range of work from varied industry sectors. This gives us the stability and confidence to invest for the future and sufficient variability to sustain an interesting and balanced workflow. Plans are in hand for further significant investment in plant during 2015.” Tim added.

Operating from Manchester and Cambridge in addition to Birmingham, Wallwork provide a nationwide surface engineering service. In addition to thermal processing the company also produce advanced surface coatings that confer hardness and reduce friction and meet Nadcap accreditation standards.

A dedicated vacuum brazing department can undertake development work to produce bespoke components or scale up production for higher volume applications. Highly trained scientists and technicians, in research and development laboratories that are equipped to a standard normally only seen in university material science departments, ensure quality assurance and also undertake pioneering research to develop new and better materials and processes.
