How Refurbishing Transforms UK Homes

It has long been the question for families looking to improve their living conditions: do we move or refurbish?

EXETER, U.K. - Jan. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- An article by The Independent suggests that the latter choice is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners in the UK each year. According to a survey by design company Houzz, only 1% of homeowners feel they have achieved their dream home, and as a result one third of people redecorate their property every year. So what are the benefits of renovating your home, and are we really living in a “renovation nation”?

Of the 8,000 respondents questioned, a third claim that they choose to renovate as a method of adding value to their home. This is a very smart decision. In a competitive and highly-priced property market, trying to buy a new house can be very difficult, not to mention selling your current property. It may always feel like there are bigger and more impressive properties drawing potential buyers away, but in fact refurbishing your home can add considerable value to your home, both monetary and in terms of attractiveness to a buyer.

However, you don’t have to be intending to sell up in the future to consider refurbishing. 78% of people surveyed by Houzz said that they redecorate their home in order to enhance the ‘look and feel’ of the property, and 55% to ‘improve functionality’. Moving can be stressful, and so if you can get the extra space, functionality or simply aesthetics you desire from the property you currently own, then this is much cheaper and simpler for you.

The top three ways to renovate your home

Loft conversions

Around 35%of the survey respondents claim to have increased the size of their home in the past five years, many of these changed being in the form of loft conversions. Loft conversions are a great choice for many families, especially those living in high-density areas such as London and other cities. Loft conversions in Exeter are becoming more popular, too, as homeowners make use of the large loft areas traditional townhouses provide. Space can be limited, so more people are choosing to expand vertically. A loft conversion means that you don’t compromise that valuable garden space, or in fact any space in your home - you simply work with the loft area you have and probably aren’t making much use of currently.

Converting a loft can be great for anything from creating a spacious extra bedroom or relaxing study to a luxurious bathroom. The light of velux windows and open-plan setup with sloped ceilings can look incredibly stylish and create amazing spaces. This job can cost between £20,000 and £50,000, but can add up to an impressive £150,000 to your home, so if you do sell in the future you will make huge profits.

Kitchens and bathrooms

When asked what feature homeowners would most like to incorporate in their home, one in five of those interviewed said that they would love to own a beautifully designed kitchen. Modern bathrooms and kitchens are both extremely popular at the moment, in fact, they are perhaps the selling point in terms of room space for most buyers. Kitchens and bathrooms must look contemporary and clean, as people spend a lot of their time in them and they are associated with with cleanliness.

Getting a new kitchen or bathroom fitted can make your whole home feel new, and can add tens of thousands of pounds to the value of your home. Whether it be that gorgeous hardwood worktop or the sleek Grecian bathroom tiling, everyone has different tastes, but a modern bathroom and kitchen speaks luxury, and can make living in your home that bit more indulgent.

Painting and decorating

You don’t have to have a huge budget to create a brand new beautiful look in your home. Painters and decorators Exeter and around the UK can work with you to choose the perfect palette of colours, shades and textures and then craft a space with a completely refreshed feel for very little expense. Modernising your home every few years can significantly improve your quality of life as your home reflects your developing tastes. It can also add value to your home. Buyers are always going to be most interested in homes which look up-to-date a stylish, and this can be remarkably easy to achieve with a slick of paint and the right furnishings. Complete transformation without breaking the bank!

So it looks like the UK really is a country invested in refurbishing their homes. There are so many ways you can rethink the look of your house, on any budget. Instead of trawling through house details, join the rest of the ‘renovation nation’ and make the best out of the home you currently live in. It’s cheaper, it’s easier and can make your home feel like new.
