Minimal Administrative Revision in Two Clauses of CEN Standard EN 71-1:2014 on Toy Cords

From the 23 November 2014 a revised version of EN 71-1:2014 ‘physical and mechanical properties” is made available by CEN. The standard is officially published and implementation by national standards organizations will be latest by 31 May 2015.

SPIJKENISSE, Netherlands - Jan. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- This revised version contains only one very small change to include the text “more than 6 mm” in two places: in clause 5.4 and clause 8.39 of EN 71-1. The full details of the change are below (new text is highlighted in red):

5.4 Cords, chains and electrical cables in toys (see A.29)
e)    The force of self-retraction mechanisms for cords in toys shall not retract the cord more than 6 mm under any of the testing-conditions specified in 8.39 (self-retracting cords).

8.39 Self-retracting cords (see 5.4 e)
Position the toy such that the cord is suspended vertically beneath the toy and the force of the recoil mechanism is not impaired.

Attach a mass of (1 more or less 0,1) kg to the free end of the cord. Determine whether the recoil mechanism is able to lift the mass by retracting the cord more than 6 mm, under any of the following conditions:

Why an Administrative Revision?

- The publication is for administrative reasons. This minimal change was needed due to CEN rules that require a revision after three amendments. Previously EN 71-1 had up to 14 amendments before a revision was published. In order to allow for continuation of other ongoing work it was decided to publish a non-controversial minimal change in order to comply with CEN rules.

- Please also note this publication is not harmonized yet (does not show compliance with the toy directive). The harmonization is to be done by the EU commission.
