It’s tuxedo time at North American International Auto Show gala charity preview

Jan. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- The North American International Auto Show’s annual charity preview taking place this Friday, Jan. 16 in Detroit will likely host a sellout crowd of thousands of nattily-attired men and women at the black tie event.

And, for the men attending the gala, questions usually arise over just what the term “black tie” is all about. Is it a classic look (think George Clooney at the Oscars), or trendy with a twist (think Samuel L. Jackson frock jackets)? Colorful or traditionally old-school black?

Time to consult John Burton, divisional vice president for Tom James Company (http://www.tomjames.com/)’s offices in Detroit, which serves busy and fashion-conscious clients by providing in-home and in-office custom tailoring and formal, executive, and casual clothing. Tom James represents famous makers and textile mills such as Oxxford Clothiers of Chicago and Holland & Sherry in the U.K.

Burton, who has more than 23 years of experience, offers some sage sartorial advice for men planning to make this week’s charity gala scene. “Getting a proper fit is first and foremost,” says Burton. “Pay close attention to the shoulders, the taper of the shirt, and the trousers. Even a large guy doesn’t have to have a baggy-looking tux. You want clean details that will make you look confident without trying too hard.”

“In this case, your tailor is your best friend.”

Other tux tips offered by Burton include understanding the black-tie look. “In a classic no-nonsense world,” he says “it’s a black or midnight blue wool jacket with a peaked lapel of satin or grosgrain. The matching trousers always have a banded outer seam, and are not cuffed. Shirts are white cotton and nicely fitted. The tie is a black silk bow tie – never a four-in-hand long tie - that you should be able to tie yourself (see YouTube for tutorials) There’s the matching black waistcoat or cummerbund, with the pleats facing upward, and black patent leather shoes.”

For men who regularly attend the auto show charity preview, the best advice is to invest the time and the money to purchase a tailored tuxedo and accessories versus a rented outfit. “Not only will you look a thousand percent better,” Burton says, “you will save yourself a lot of time and money in just a few years by having that perfect tux in your wardrobe.”
