Jan. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- Datix, the provider of patient safety software, has announced that Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), the largest hospital in the North Simcoe Muskoka region, in Ontario, Canada has implemented Datix patient safety software.  The hospital, ranked among the top 20 percent in the country for its high quality care and patient safety by Accreditation Canada, has deployed Datix to automate the organization’s incident and complaints management processes.  At a time when RVH has completed a $450 million expansion project that doubled the size and scope of the hospital, the implementation of Datix supports RVH’s aims to drive clinical excellence by focusing on patient safety and risk reduction.

Prior to Datix, RVH used a paper based system for patient and non-person incidents plus an in-house developed electronic system to record security incidents. Datix was selected after a rigorous evaluation of the marketplace conducted on behalf of RVH by the Central Ontario Healthcare Procurement Alliance (COHPA), a Shared Services Organization providing source to pay services in support of affiliate hospitals.

Patti Snider, Quality and Risk Coordinator at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, commented, “Datix was chosen because it offered superior functionality and value for money in one totally integrated and highly intuitive package.  Easy to use, the new system promised to deliver the real-time data and advanced reporting capabilities we wanted from day one with the flexibility and scalability we needed for the future.”

RVH purchased Datix web-based modules for incident and complaints management. After a successful three-week pilot the new Datix system went live at the end of 2013 for incident management followed by complaints management at the beginning of 2014.  The smooth roll-out of the new technology was facilitated by a three-week intensive training programme provided by Patti Snider and her team.  This was supported by a well executed internal communications plan together with a series of drop-in sessions for front-line staff. E-learning tools and reference sheets further boosted user confidence and encouraged widespread acceptance of the new system.

RVH employees have readily adopted the Datix system with its ease of use and automated capabilities to capture a wide range of incidents in a single, integrated solution.  Patient safety incidents include patient slips, falls, near misses and medication errors. Also covered are mishaps occurring to visitors, security issues and injuries to cleaning staff.  All incidents are stored centrally and email alerts are flagged to specialist or senior members of staff for further investigation and final resolution.

One of the biggest benefits has been the real-time data provided by Datix.  At a glance, users have clear visibility of all incidents as they occur, promoting faster incident resolution and improving communication across the organization.

Jonathan Hazan, Chief Executive of Datix, concluded, “Datix gives healthcare organisations like RVH the timely, accurate clinical information and evidence they need to promote better knowledge, better clinical outcomes and ultimately reduce harm for the patients entrusted to their care. The technology streamlines processes, giving the transparency and greater visibility necessary to improve patient safety and reduce risk.  Working with RVH, we look forward to ensuring the hospital remains a leader in the delivery of safe, high quality care.”
