SpaceUnited Provides Satellite Image To Improve Water Access In Cambodia

ARVADA, Colo. - Jan. 13, 2015 - PRLog -- SpaceUnited, an Arvada-based humanitarian space agency, recently provided a free 36 km^2 satellite image to fellow Arvada nonprofit LightBridge International. The image will be used to improve water access in a remote Cambodian village based on more accurate population data gleaned from the technology.

“The satellite image will give us quantitative estimates of the village’s total area and number of structures. These measurements will help us get a better estimate of the village's population and usable farmland. The image will also help to identify natural water sources that villagers utilize, and help us identify the best options for water filtration within the village,” said LightBridge director Karla Tillapaugh.

The image was taken by Airbus satellite Pleiades and was purchased through Colorado reseller AllSource Analysis. AllSource also provided free imagery analysis for the project, including a grid overlay that was integral to the population density measurement process.

“It was great getting to work with other Colorado organizations on this satellite image project. Because SpaceUnited works with so many international partners, it’s not often that we get to team up with a local charity. LightBridge International does some amazing work in Cambodia and this satellite image will improve lives,” said SpaceUnited president Troy Dunn.

The LightBridge image is a part of a larger SpaceUnited mission called ImageGryphon. Data given as a part of this program has contributed to a wide array of humanitarian initiatives including refugee aid, farm irrigation, and genocide prevention. Three other images have already been provided pro bono to organizations working in Jordan, Kenya, and Iran, and five more are planned in the first quarter of 2015.
