Follow on Google News | British Nationals in Kenya can enrol in Security SMS alert service from British High CommissionWith terrorism, acts of violence and levels of unrest increasing globally, staying safe when living, working or travelling abroad is a mounting priority.
As well as the ability to sign up for basic travel alerts via email, The British High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya is offering the facility for British Nationals to enrol in a highly innovative SMS service. People are able to sign up to the service by sending a simple text: Texting regp (for permanent residents) and regv (for visitors) to +447537404755. Users get an immediate response informing of their successful sign-up. Once enrolled the person is sent live alerts directly from the embassy’s security team, right to their mobile phone, keeping them informed real-time of local issues or potential threats to safety. The PROTECT SMS system from provider Mobisoft Corporation Ltd has been sponsored by two local companies in Kenya, G4S and East Africa Breweries Ltd who provided funding for the system and welcomed the opportunity to be associated with the service and its benefits. Daniel Metcalfe, CEO for Mobisoft Corporation said; “Our PROTECT platform is being deployed by a significant number of embassies, international bodies and corporate clients. The unique way we route our traffic to complicated locations has enabled our clients to exploit our systems locally. We are pleased that members of the public can now receive similar levels of alerts that embassy staff obtain.” Mobisoft have worked closely with Government export body UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), receiving detailed advice and support. Michael Axelrod, International Trade Adviser, said: “Mobisoft have taken part in UKTI’s Passport to Export programme and have been working with UKTI to roll out this innovative product in a number of different markets including Kenya. This unique messaging and security alert service lends itself to the international market and demonstrates that with vision, insight and help from UKTI, there are great opportunities for British products to help to target specific problems overseas.” The British High Commission in Nairobi, who are already using the PROTECT platform to message its own staff, decided to roll out the system further. The decision to cover British nationals was based on the clear advantages PROTECT has provided them via their own use. The expectation is that more embassies will follow suit. End
