SAN DIEGO - Jan. 8, 2015 - PRLog -- San Diego Self Storage (SDSS) donated two urgently-needed storage units at their Encinitas Self Storage facility to house an influx of donated items for the Encinitas-based Community Resource Center’s (CRC) Holiday Baskets program in December. The CRC Holiday Baskets program is the largest distribution project of its kind in San Diego County, providing a dignified and free shopping experience for families who might otherwise not be able to afford holiday gifts for their families. This year, the annual CRC distribution program took place on December 19-21 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which is hosted by the CRC to benefit San Diegans most in need.

SDSS Managing Partner, J. Terry Aston, remarks, “We were contacted by a representative from CRC when they realized that they would be receiving between 150-200 bicycles for the Holiday Gift Basket program far in advance of their move-in date to the Del Mar Fairgrounds for the event in December. They also needed supplemental space to store large pallets of non-perishable food, so we opted to provide a separate storage space that could be designated for consumable goods. In addition, we donated 200 toys to facilitate their outreach effort in order to benefit children that attended the Del Mar Fairgrounds event.”

Community Resource Center’s (CRC) Holiday Baskets program provides approximately 6,000 local San Diegans in need with food, coats, blankets, and gifts for children during the holiday season. According to CRC spokesperson, John Economides, “Families sign up and are screened in advance of the distribution. For instance, they can request one bike for a specific person in the family and shortly before we actually distribute the bikes, staff will assign bikes to families based on available inventory, ascertain whether families have received bikes in the past from our program, and research the financial need of the family. We continually scour multiple discount food sources for special food deals we can purchase at a discount; when we find them; we are then faced with an urgent need to store the food because immediate deliveries often offer the lowest prices. In one recent instance, for less than $600 we were able to purchase food that would normally cost $30,000 at retail prices in the store. We couldn't take advantage of this opportunity without the help provided by San Diego Self Storage, which allows us to can capitalize on these bulk savings and pass them along to our constituents.”
