Recycling Includes More Than Just Plastic

We use hundreds of tons of recycled plastic in our products every year. But we also use thousands of tons of steel every year - more than 96% includes recycled content.

CHEROKEE, Iowa - Jan. 6, 2015 - PRLog -- Most people probably equate recycling with plastic milk jugs and drink bottles. Recycling those products is an easy way for everyone to be involved.  At R.J. Thomas Mfg. Co., we use hundreds of tons of recycled plastic planks made from these bottles in our benches, picnic tables and trash receptacles every year. However, there are recycling options beyond plastic – we use recycled steel in our products too.

We use more than 2,100 tons of steel every year – in almost every product we manufacture. More than 96% of this steel includes recycled content, which means less than 4% is brand new steel.  Here are just a few of our products that contain some post-consumer and post-industrial recycled steel:

Steel plates used to form charcoal grill fireboxes and campfire rings.

Solid steel bars used for cooking grates.

Round and square steel tubing used for bench and picnic table frames.

Expanded and perforated steel used on bench and table seats and tops.

The percentage of recycled content can vary depending on the type of steel and the profile purchased, like steel plate vs. steel tube.  Additionally, the total recycled steel used will vary depending on the mix of steel components used to make a product.  For example, our EC Covered Grills contain 76% recycled steel, while our L-1500 large Shelter House grill uses 81% recycled steel.  Most other grills are fabricated using 85% recycled steel by weight in their structures.

Here’s how a few of our other products measure up:

On various picnic tables, the frame structures use round and steel tube components that range from 85% to 97% recycled content.

Park bench frames can range from 72% to 98% recycled content.

Expanded steel or perforated steel seats and tops on picnic tables and park benches contain 70% recycled content.

Another great fact about our recycled steel products: they can all be recycled again into more grills, fire rings, benches and picnic tables!

Similar to steel, our aluminum options on some benches and picnic tables contain 40% recycled materials. The Pilot Rock brand products contain many recycled components – giving you the opportunity to reduce, reuse and recycle by simply placing these eco-conscious products in your parks, campgrounds and facilities.

Our efforts don’t end in our factory; our company culture is one of recycling. Office and production waste materials, paper documents, magazines, catalogs, steel scraps, pallets, computer equipment, cardboard and other packaging wastes are recycled. We also have a program to encourage staff to bring waste plastic packaging from home for collection here. That means our staff is helping to create some of the recycled plastic planks we use on our park equipment! Recycling is simply a part of our company philosophy.
