SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Jan. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- Winter is flu season across Northern Hemisphere, but people can also become sick when exposed to an unhealthy indoor environment.  Sick building syndrome, also referred to as SBS, is a term used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified.

The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout the building. In contrast, the term building related illness is used when symptoms of diagnosable illness are identified and can be attributed directly to airborne building contaminants.

An article printed in Business Week reported that U.S. companies could save as much as $58 billion annually by preventing sick building illnesses and an additional $200 billion in worker performance improvements by creating offices with better indoor air.

One of the leading providers of consulting and testing services for SBS in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean is Zimmetry Environmental.  “There are many potential causes and possible contributing factors for SBS,” shared Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “They may include issues with ventilation, temperature, humidity, light intensity, noise, chemical contaminants from either indoor or outdoor sources, and biological contaminants associated with mold, bacteria, pollen and other substances.  It takes an experienced SBS investigator to understand how occupant activities, the HVAC system, pollutant pathways and potential contaminant sources all come together to cause SBS.”

Zimmetry’s SBS services take a scientific and systematic approach to find answers and solutions.  Their team utilizes the most advanced instrumentation to perform a comprehensive investigation that searches beyond a single cause. They incorporate their knowledge of applicable regulations while offering their expertise and confidentiality.
