A winter storm is all set to hit the United Kingdom and parts of central Europe during the Boxing Day weekend this month. The Met department has warned that the weather could pose a threat to holiday travel in the UK.

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, U.K. - Jan. 3, 2015 - PRLog -- Weather is playing spoilsport yet again this holiday season in the UK. The Met office had warned that rain and snow could follow a winter storm that is likely to hit the European continent post Christmas. The weather could disrupt Christmas travel, which includes delays and cancellation of flights into and out of the UK. According to the weather site, Accuweather.com, the rain storm will hit the UK on Friday, December 26 and reach the German and French borders by the Boxing Day weekend.

The United Kingdom will experience severe wet weather due to the storm, while regions in central Europe could experience severe snow disruptions. Rain will lash out across regions in the UK and Ireland through Friday night, starting around the afternoon or evening, leaving Friday morning as the only time to go out celebrating or shopping. Christmas travellers across the UK had to deal with flight delays ranging from 15 minutes to many hours on Christmas Eve, no thanks to the wet and soggy weather that has quashed the dreams of a white Christmas in the country.

Northern Ireland, England and southern Scotland are likely to experience a mix of rain that will turn into snow fall ranging 2 - 8 cms around Saturday. The Met department has sent out a yellow severe weather warning, which means to "be aware" of the upcoming storm. Snow could be the major cause of disruptions for those planning to travel on Boxing Day.

While most of the roads and trains were quiet on Christmas Eve, the airports have been very busy with passengers heading for a foreign holiday. A total of four million people from the UK are travelling abroad this holiday season, between December 19 and January 3. The long haul destinations that the English are heading to this holiday season include Dubai, Cuba, Egypt and Mexico, Morocco, Tunisia and the Canary Islands.

Manchester, Gatwick and Heathrow continue to be the busiest airports at this time. For a second year in a row, passengers travelling through Gatwick had to experience disruptions due to flooding in the airport on Christmas Eve this year. Several flights scheduled to depart from Gatwick had to be cancelled while some were delayed for hours due to bad weather.

While weather is one factor likely to affect flight departures in the UK, the strike by French cabin crew has led to cancellations of several Easy Jet flights that were scheduled for Christmas Eve. A total of 38 flights have been cancelled as a precautionary measure.
