SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Dec. 30, 2014 - PRLog -- Advanced Irrigation, a St Paul area commercial snow removal company, is offering people tips on how to safely shovel snow. These suggestions can help St Paul residents shovel snow without hurting themselves.

Advanced Irrigation suggests that residents think of snow shoveling as exercise. The company suggests warming up before you begin, taking breaks when you need them and staying hydrated throughout the entire process.

The commercial snow removal company also recommends that people should stop shoveling snow if they feel any pain or shortness of breath. Both of these problems could indicate a larger health issue that should be addressed immediately.

They also recommend that you get a snow shovel that is appropriate for your height. You should try to find one with a handle that is curved, and while shoveling, you should be able to bend your knees and flex your back at a 10-degree angle (at most) during the first part of the shoveling stroke motion.

Advanced Irrigation also recommends people find a shovel with a plastic blade instead of a metal blade. Plastic blades tend to weigh less than metal, and that could mean there is less stress on your back as you are shoveling.

You should also shovel snow by pushing it where you want it to go. Do not use your shovel to lift the snow and toss it aside. This can cause undue stress on your back, knees and the rest of your body. And the same rules apply to snow shoveling as when you are lifting something heavy. If you do have to lift the snow, lift with your knees and not your back. Keep your hands about 12 inches apart as you are doing this, and this will give you the best leverage.

The commercial snow removal company also says people should consider buying a snow blower if shoveling is getting to be too difficult.

Finally, Advanced Irrigation says you should put de-icer down only if it is needed and never on your grass or lawn. If de-icer ends up on your lawn, it could kill the grass and other plants.

Advanced Irrigation has been serving St Paul and the entire Twin Cities Metro for more than 11 years. The company specializes commercial snow removal, lawn care and irrigation systems. Some services include system installation, landscape edging, tree removal, fertilizing and more.
