PERTH, U.K. - Dec. 30, 2014 - PRLog -- One of Britain’s leading alpine skiers, Charlie Guest, has been was back on the slopes this week after recovering from a broken back which she sustained in an accident in Sweden several weeks ago.

Charlie, who was the UK’s top spot for Slalom and second position for Giant Slalom at the time of her accident, had her training for the World Championships cut short when a potentially career ending crash on the slopes left her with a broken back.

Showing true athletic spirit, Charlie was back on the slopes of Scotland’s Cairngorm mountains yesterday, just a few short weeks after her accident, demonstrating the drive and determination we have come to expect from our top athletes.

She commented:

“Yesterday was a great day for me. I’ve been closely following a recovery programme and we felt it was time to see what was possible and, with the recent snowfall, it gave me a good opportunity to really test myself. I’m a little stiff, but making good progress and very much being guided by my team at the Scottish Institute of Sport.”

Originally from Perth, the 20-year-old suffered broken vertebrae after hitting a boulder while on a training session with her coach in Sweden. Charlie’s injuries would almost certainly have been far more severe had she not been wearing a back protector which Charlie had only worn twice before the accident.

The back protector, now part of her essential kit, was very much in place on yesterday’s training run. Charlie commented:

“The back protector is a must for me now. And it should be essential ski-wear for everyone. Without wearing a back protector my injuries could have spelled the end of my career. It should be compulsory wear for all ski-ers regardless of level and ability.”

While Charlie works her way back to fitness in Scotland, her team-mates have continued to train and compete abroad. Last week, fellow Scots team-mate Alex Tilley took her position as the UK’s No 1 Slalom Skier, a title formerly held by Charlie prior to her accident.

Charlie commented:

“Alex is ski-ing very well this season but my focus is solely on getting back into training with a view to getting to competition level quickly. Once I’m back I’ll be definitely be looking to climb back to the number one position once again. And I’m still not ruling out the World Championships in February.”
