Bronx, NYC, December 24^th, 2014 - Funeral services for the late Maizie Brodber McLaren, who was Vice President of the Fishbay Neighborhood Association in the Northeast Bronx, Member of the NCNW (National Council of Negro Women) overcame insurmountable odds to become a Registered Nurse / Health Care Provider and Pillar of the Northeast Bronx community.

The funeral, will be held at 9:30 am in Trinity Baptist Church, 808 East 224^th Street, Bronx, NY 10466 on Tuesday, December 30. Ms. Brodber-McLaren, who would have been 81 years old on March 2nd died last Monday, December 15th.She will then be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery at 517 East 233^rd Street, Bronx, NY 10470. Viewing and Wake will be held at Granby’s Funeral Home on Monday December 29^th, 2014 4-7pm with repass at 7-8pm.

Officiating at the service will be the Reverend Naomi Tyler Lloyd, Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, with the benediction given by Dr. Edna Honeyghan, Dr. Delroy Forbes will deliver Acknowledgement on behalf of the family, and daughter Arlene McLaren, will deliver the obituary.

Maizie Brodber McLaren left Jamaica West Indies at an early age for a sea voyage to Manchester England to enter nursing school at Crumpsall Hospital in Preliminary and General Nursing Training. On Completion of General Training as a State Registered Nurse, she decided to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps and studied Midwifery.

She completed the program at Macclesfield in Cheshire, England where she earned her (SCM) State Certified Midwife Certificate.  The she pursued post graduate studies at Manchester University in Health Vistiting.  Two years later she practiced a Manchester Health Corporation where she worked as a Liaison between the Hospital District and the Community.

She came to the USA as an Exchange Student and had to leave the USA on completion of her program. She continued with additional post graduate work in Eye, Ear Nose & Throat in Boston Massachusetts and then practiced Midwifery as Head Nurse at Cook County Hospital in Chicago where she worked in OBGYN Labor and Delivery.

She then went to Toronto Canada and enrolled in courses at Toronto University qualified for courses to be certified to practice public health in Canada.  When she returned to the US she took her NY State Board Exam for practicing in New York.  She passed her state board exam and attended St. Josephs College in Brooklyn to pursue a BS Degree in Health Education.  She worked at Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Calvary, St. Barnabas and Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Ms. Brodber moved to this country in 1968 where she married and had one daughter.  She is a proud grandmother of two granddaughters and is very much involved with her community.  As a member of this community for over 40 years, she has served as the Vice President of Fishbay Neighborhood Association, a member of the Boston Rain Senior Center, as well as a member the NCNW.

She is also a member of trinity Baptist Church and is engaged in ministries such as the Nurses Health Ministry, the Winter Spring Ministry, Dr. Honeygahan’s Bereavement Site Team and Sunday School and is an active AARP member.  Maizie is a supporter and contributor of various religious, political & social organizations.

To name a few “Love a Child, Christian Chidren’s fund, Covenant House, TBN Silent Unity, and Family Radio.  Mazie volunteered taking Blood Pressure at Senior Citizens Center.  Assists with Transportation of those in need of a ride to various places including church, senior centers and shopping is always ready to help in whatever capacity she can.
